Bronx, N.Y. - (Oct. 5, 2012) - On a picture perfect day at Van Cortlandt Park, the Fordham cross country teams hosted the 2012 Metropolitan Championship on Friday, posting one of the best overall team finishes in recent memory. The Fordham men placed second behind only NYU, while the women's team took third place behind Columbia and Rutgers.
In the 12-team men's race, NYU won the team title with 50 points, as the Violets had three of the top five finishers, followed by Fordham with 68 points, Columbia with 78 points, and Iona with 111.
Individually, Iona's Ethan Heywood won medalist honors in a time of 25:53.71, followed by NYU's Sebastian Oja (26:05.61) and Kevin Bonilla (26:22.49) in second and third place respectively.
Nick Synan led the way for the Rams in fourth place, clocking in at 26:29.71, while Mike Turi took seventh in 26:35.30. Jonathan Annelli (27:00.30) and Ryan Polo (27:03.15) placed 17th and 18th respectively, followed by Quincy O'Connor in 22nd (27:16.75).
Other Fordham competitors were Kevin Harvey (30th - 27:36.58), Ben Delikat (38th - 27:52.47), Patrick Burke (45th - 28:05.57), William Slattery (48th - 28:10.10), Conor O'Malley (63rd - 29:01.23), Tim Kazanjian (67th - 29:07.58), Joe Hartnett (71st - 29:12.86), and Devin Kelly (76th - 29:37.80).
In the 12-team women's race, Columbia won the team crown with a score of 18 points, followed in by Rutgers (66), Fordham (79), and NYU (84) to round out the top four.
Columbia's Mallory Anderson won medalist honors with a time of 18:14.99, just ahead of her fellow teammates, Caroline Williams (2nd - 18:23.22) and Leila Mantilla (3rd - 18:25.82). The Lions had six runners finish in the top ten in the race.
For Fordham, Anisa Arsenault gave the Rams another fourth place finish, as she recorded a time of 18:26.80. Suzy Sikorski also ended up in the top 10, placing tenth in 19:10.02. Mara Lieberman took 18th overall in 19:30.28, followed by Danielle Drummond in 21st (19:52.42), Melissa Higgins in 26th (20:04.47), Christina Vivinetto in 33rd (20:15.68) and Sarah Glockenmeier in 34th (20:17.75).
Other competitors for Fordham were Kerry Sorenson (45th - 20:24.18), Shannon McKenna (58th - 20:52.99), Christina Machado (60th - 21:02.50), Jillian Brooks (61st - 21:06.69), Amanda Foggia (71st - 21:23.98), Melanie Notarstefano (90th - 22:14.00), Ashley Davis (95th - 22:31.04), and Kellen Fitzgerald (112th - 23:46.63).
The Fordham cross country teams will next be in action on Saturday, October 13th, as the Rams compete at the Tribe Open Meet, hosted by William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va.
