Cross Country Competes at the 2012 Atlantic 10 Championships

Belmont Plateau, Pa. - (Oct. 27, 2012) - The Fordham cross country teams traveled to Philadelphia on Saturday morning to compete in the 2012 Atlantic 10 Championship at Belmont Plateau. By races' end, the Fordham men tied for eighth out of 16 teams, while the women were 13th out of 16 teams.

In its first Atlantic 10 Championship, Butler captured both the men's and the women's titles on Saturday. On the men's side, Butler was the runaway winner with 38 points, placing four runners in the top ten. The Bulldogs were followed by Saint Joseph's (121), La Salle (122), Temple (127), Duquesne (153), Dayton (176), Richmond (206), Fordham and Massachusetts (221), Xavier (234), Saint Louis (247), VCU (280), George Washington (333), Charlotte (373), Rhode Island (457), and St. Bonaventure (508).

Individually, Temple's Travis Mahoney won the men's 8K race in a time of 25:16.5.

Fordham's top finisher was freshman Mike Turi, as he placed 28th overall in 26:37.5. He was the second freshman in the field to cross the line, making him runner-up to Butler's Eric Peterson for Rookie of the Meet honors.

Junior Michael Belgiovine was the next Ram across the line in 35th in 26:41.2, while senior Nicholas Synan was 50th in 26:49.9. Ryan Polo placed 53rd overall (26:56.5) and was followed by Kevin Harvey (64th - 27:10.2), Jonathan Annelli (67th - 27:17.8), Quincy O'Connor (69th - 27:21.7), and Joseph Hartnett (87th - 27:45.2).

In the women's competition, Butler scored 37 points and had four runners place in the top 11. The Bulldogs were followed by La Salle (70), Richmond (125), Saint Louis (134), Xavier (150), Dayton (154), Duquesne (183), Saint Joseph's (196), Charlotte (235), George Washington (282), Rhode Island (299), Massachusetts (305), Fordham (310), Temple (347), St. Bonaventure (430), and VCU (523).

Individually, Butler's Katie Clark won top honors in a time of 16:55.9 over the 5K course.

Fordham's top runner was Anisa Arsenault, as she placed 27th overall in 18:39.1, while Suzy Sikorski was 47th overall in 19:02.8. Danielle Drummond was the next runner across the line in 75th (19:31.6), followed by Melissa Higgins (88th - 19:45.6), Christina Vivinetto (97th - 20:03.3), Jillian Brooks (106th - 20:19.5), and Mara Lieberman (107th - 20:20.0).

The Fordham cross country teams will next be in action on Friday, November 9th, when the Rams compete in the NCAA Northeast Regional in Hammonassett, Connecticut.
