Cross Country Competes at Williams and Leeber Invitationals

Williamsville, Mass.; Fairfield, Conn.  (Sept. 25, 2010) - The Fordham cross country teams split into two groups on Saturday with one traveling to Williamstown, Mass., to compete in the Williams College Invitational and the other group venturing up to Fairfield, Conn., to run in the Leeber Invitational. Both Fordham men's teams took third place while the women finished sixth at the Leeber and ninth at Williams College.

M.I.T. and Keene State tied for first in the Williams Invitational with 90 team points while Fordham tied with Tufts for third place with 106 points. Middlebury took fifth (137) followed by Boston College (145) and Williams (158) among the 18 schools competing.

Middlebury's Michael Schmidt won the individual title, covering the 8K course in 26:00 followed by Amherst's William Yochum (26:19) and Fordham's Kevin Fitzgerald (26:22), who took third overall.

Michael Belgiovine was the second Fordham finisher, taking eight overall (26:39), with Brian Riley placing 12th (26:46). Brian Walter and Julian Saad were the other two Fordham scores, placing 41st (27:33) and 42nd (27:35), respectively.

Other men competing at Williams for the Rams were Casey Barrett (65th - 27:54) and Patrick McDonough (123rd - 29:11).

At the Leeber Invitational, Fairfield won the men's race with a score of 32 followed by Sacred Heart (45), Fordham (77), Manhattan (90) and Marist (125). A total of eight teams competed.

Manhattan's Tobias Lundgren won the individual race, covering the 8K course in a time of 26:19.43. The top Fordham finisher was Nick Synan, who placed ninth in a time of 27:26.42 followed by Tim Hutchinson, who was eleventh in a time of 27:39.70. Sam Stuart (14th - 27:45.14), Joe Hartnett (19th - 27:59.90) and Tim Kazanjian (24th - 28:23.02) were the other scorers for Fordham.

Also competing for the men at the Leeber Invitational were Andrew Roddin (25th - 28:31.58), Kevin Harvey (29:05.83), Michael Walsh (38th - 29:16.78), James Doran (45th - 29:30.58), Conor O'Malley (29:35.07), Christopher Chung (55th - 30:12.97), Matt Collins (61st - 20:36.86), Bernard Moore (76th - 31:53.10) and Devin Kelly (78th - 32:14.95).

The women's team title at the Williams Invitational was won by Middlebury with 57 points, followed by Williams (76), Johns Hopkins (86), M.I.T. (102) and Amherst (142). The Rams placed ninth in the 19 team field with 227 points.

Williams' Jennifer Gossels won the individual title in the 6K race in a time of 22:17 while Kerri Gallagher was the first Ram across the finish line, placing seventh 7:20 behind Gossels in 22:46. Anisa Arsenault was the second Fordham finisher, placing 14th in 23:07, while Kerry Sorenson was the next Ram across the line, finishing 74th in 24:44. Johanne Sterling (90th - 25:04) and Mairin O'Connor (115th - 25:42) were the other scores for Fordham.

Also competing for the women at Williams were Nako Nakatsuka (131st - 25:58) and Kelly Hiemrich (149th - 26:38).

At the women's Leeber Invitational, Sacred Heart won the team title with 29 points followed by Marist (41), Fairfield (89), Manhattan (102), John Carroll (134), Fordham (169), New Haven 9185) and Bridgeport (240).

Kimberly DeLoreto from Sacred Heart won the 5K individual race in a time of 18:29.06 with Christina Machado being the first Ram to finish, placing 42nd in 21:25.05 followed by Amanda Foggia who was 43rd in 21:09.07. Also scoring for the Fordham women were Kim Naples (47th - 21:40.39), Christina Vivinetto (48th - 21:41.19) and Diane Bain (57th - 22:00.50).

Also competing for the Fordham women at the Leeber were Fallon France (65th - 22:19.27), Shannon McKenna (70th - 22:31.19), Claire Nielsen (75th - 22:50.57), Ashley Davis (76th - 22:51.80), Jana Trenk (79th - 23:04.10) and Siobhan Cooney (90th - 24:41.07).

The Rams will next be in action on Friday, October 8th as they compete in the Metropolitan Championships at Van Cortlandt Park at 2:00 PM.
