Bronx, N.Y. - (Sept. 12, 2010) - The Fordham University men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2010 season by hosting the Fordham Fiasco at Van Cortlandt Park this afternoon where the men finished third of 13 teams and the women were fifth of 18 teams.
Penn won both the men's and women's races with the men finishing with 39 points, taking fifth through seventh places individually, while Rider took second with 59 points and Fordham was third with 93. Rutgers placed fourth (105) followed by East Stroudsburg (134), Rowan (181), NY Tech (196) and Richard Stockton (224).
On the women's side, Penn won with 45 points, taking second, fifth and seventh in the individual standings, while Rutgers was ten points behind in second place. The third, fourth and fifth place teams were separated by just two points as Rider finished third (130), Rowan fourth (131) and Fordham fifth (132). East Stroudsburg (153) took sixth with New Jersey Tech (205) and St. Thomas Aquinas (282) rounding out the top eight.
Individually, Rider's Christian Gonzalez won the men's race while Fordham's Kerri Gallagher was the first across the line on the women's side.
In the men's race, Christian covered the 8K course in a time of 25:50.27, ahead of teammate Michael Soroko (26:07.41) and East Stroudsburg's Greg Laraia (26:25.93). Fordham freshman Michael Belgiovine was fourth, finishing in 26:27.98, one of the fastest freshman cross country times in Fordham history. Rounding out the top six on the men's side were Penn's Luke Grau, who placed fifth (26:32.67) and Michael Cunningham, who was sixth (26:33.08).
Other Fordham men who scored were Julian Saad (19th - 27:07.62), Casey Barrett (21st - 27:10.37), Brian Walter (23rd - 27:17.51) and Patrick McDonough (28th - 27:25.79).
Also competing for the Fordham men were Kevin Harvey (32nd - 27:35.19), Matt Collins (34th - 27:38.57), Sam Stuart (35th - 27:39.07), Thomas Kelly (38th - 27:48.07), James Doran (39th - 27:50.38), Nick Synan (44th - 28:03.47), Kevin Fitzgerald (54th - 28:23.66), Rich Grandelli (60th - 28:34.47), Andrew Roddin (61st - 28:38.53), Tim Kazanjian (72nd - 29:01.70), Christopher Chung (76th - 29:18.08), Joe Hartnett (77th - 29:18,56), Tim Hutchinson (78th - 29:21.94), Michael Walsh (83rd - 29:42.55), Stephen Donnelly (101st - 20:56.22).
Gallagher won the women's 5K race in a time of 18:17.64, almost ten seconds ahead of runner-up Leslie Kovach of Penn (18:26.51). Jen Rawls of Rowan was third (18:31.25) followed by East Stroudsburg's Rose Mascoli (18:32.13), Penn's Megan Powell (18:47.79) and Rutger's Brianna Deming (18:52.93).
Other women who scored for Fordham included Anisa Arsenault, who placed ninth (18:58.68), Nako Nakatsuka, who was 43rd (20:38.69), Johanne Sterling, who finished 48th (20:47.24) and Mairin O'Connor, who was 58th (21:13.26).
Other competitors for the Fordham women included Christina Vivinetto (69th - 21:35.41), Kim Naples (70th - 21:36.51), Christina Machado (73rd - 21:41.58), Diane Bain (92nd - 21:59.84), Fallon France (97th - 22:05.77), Ashley Davis (119th - 22:54.31), Claire Nielsen (131st - 23:46.27) and Siobhan Cooney (133rd - 23:57.77).
The Fordham men's and women's cross country teams will next be in action on Saturday, September 18th, as they compete at the C.W. Post Invitational in Brookville, N.Y. at 10:30 AM.
