Squash Opens Season at Navy Round Robin

Annapolis, Md. - (November 16, 2008) - The Fordham squash team began their 2008-09 season this past weekend at the Navy Round Robin in Annapolis, Maryland, but came up on the short end in all five matches. The Rams lost matches to Navy, Navy "B", George Washington, Columbia, and Georgetown.

Fordham opened the round robin tournament with a 9-0 loss to Navy. All nine matches were three set sweep by the Midshipmen. The closest matches came at the #1 slot, where Fordham's Mike Hennessy fell to Allan Lutz, 9-5, 9-1, and 9-0, while at the #5 slot, Fordham's Brandon Abbatiello lost to Justin Langan, 9-1, 9-0, and 9-7.

The Rams then took on the Navy "B" squad, improving their play, but still fell by a 9-0 count. Both Abbatiello and Peter Slucky (#4) came up just short, falling by identical scores of 9-7, 9-6, and 9-6 to Lincold Barber and Pat Hamilton, respectively. Fordham's Peter Jang also played a close match at the #2 slot, dropping the match to Chris Verona, 9-7, 9-4, and 9-7.

On Saturday, Fordham took on the Colonials of George Washington, but found similar results, as the Colonials swept all nine matches for the win. Abbatiello continued to be Fordham's top performer of the weekend, falling to Max Collins, 9-6, 9-4, and 9-3. Fordham's Jason Sherriff also played a competitive match against Matt Nelson-Teutsh at the #3 slot, falling by scores of 9-6, 9-2, and 9-4.

The Rams put their best effort of the weekend against Columbia and came up with a 6-3 loss to the Lions. Abbatiello won his match at #5 over Adish Uberdi, 9-7, 9-4, and 9-6, while Fordham's Tyler McCoy won a five-set match over Rohan Khatau, 9-0, 9-6, 2-9, 0-9, and 9-4. After picking a up a default point at the #9 slot, Sherriff almost pulled out another win, but lost in five sets to Daniel Gentile, 1-9, 0-9, 9-1, 9-7, and 9-1.

In the final match of the tournament, Fordham fell to Georgetown, 9-0. Out of the matches, Fordham's best chance for a point was at the #6 slot, as Teddy Cronin lost in five sets to Brendan Renehan, 5-9, 9-4, 9-4, 5-9, and 9-7.

The Fordham squash team will next be in action on Saturday, November 22nd, when the Rams host Bard College at the Lombardi Center Squash Courts, beginning at 2:00 PM.
