Charlotte, N.C. - (Nov. 1, 2008) - On a sunny and warm morning in Charlotte, the Massachusetts men and Richmond women were victorious at Saturday's Atlantic 10 Cross Country Championships on the Charlotte Campus Course in Charlotte, N.C. Fordham took tenth place in both competitions out of 14 teams.
On the men's side, Massachusetts took home the team title with 75 points. Charlotte's Adu Dentamo stole the show by turning in a time of 24:01, which is the fastest A-10 championship time in 23 years and the third fastest time in conference history.
On the women's side, Richmond claimed the team title with 48 points, but Charlotte sophomore Amanda Goetschius took home the individual crown, as she crossed the line in a time of 17:37.7 which was also the third fastest time in A-10 championship history.
Duquesne finished in the runner-up spot in the men's race, followed by Richmond (111), Charlotte (115), La Salle (122), Dayton (130), Saint Joseph's (132), Xavier (184), Temple (275), Fordham (283), George Washington (313), Saint Louis (333), Rhode Island (378) and St. Bonaventure (455).
For Fordham, freshman Brian Riley was the top performer, placing 42nd overall in 25:29.1, quickly followed by senior Clifton Hilario in 44th place in 25:31.6. Junior Tim Hartnett was 66th overall (26:10.8) with fellow junior Paul Szczepaniak taking 86th overall in 26:49.3 over the 8K course. Also competing for the Rams was freshman Kevin Fitzgerald (92nd - 26:55.7), senior Ryan Campi (95th - 27:03.0), senior Tom Papain (96th - 27:05.0), sophomore Tom Kelly (98th - 27:06.3), sophomore Casey Barrett (105th - 27:16.6), and freshman Sam Stuart (106th - 27:18.3).
Charlotte was the runner-up in the women's race with 68 points while Dayton took home a third place finish with 103 points. Xavier was fourth with 108 points, followed by Duquesne (151), Saint Louis (154), Massachusetts (186), Saint Joseph's (225), George Washington (232), Fordham (263), La Salle (290), Rhode Island (314), Temple (406) and St. Bonaventure (457).
For Fordham, senior
Brigid Moriarty finished in the top 20, taking 17th in 18:45.1 over the 5K course, while sophomore
Kerri Gallagher was right behind her in 21st place in 18:47.5. Senior
Jacqueline Prevete was the next Ram finisher in 89th place (20:09.1), followed by
Susanne Hansen (94th - 20:13.6), freshman
Mairin O'Connor (103rd - 20:37.0), and freshman
Siobhan Cooney (122nd - 21:14.0).
The Fordham cross country teams will next be in action on Saturday, November 8th, as they compete in the Bad Boy V Invitational, held at Van Cortlandt Park.
