Box Score 2 COLUMBIA, S.C. – Dropping game two in heartbreaking fashion in the bottom of the seventh, Fordham University Softball fell in a pair of games Saturday afternoon at the Garnet and Black Invitational.
Fordham allowed just a single run to the nationally ranked Gamecocks through the first four innings, before tying the game in the top of the fifth. South Carolina rattled off eight runs in the next two frames, taking the game by run rule, 9-1.
Later in the day the Maroon and White pulled out to a 1-0 lead early against UNLV, trading one run apiece in the fifth inning, before the Rebels walked things off with a two run homer in the bottom of the seventh.
Game One: No. 24/21 South Carolina 9, Fordham 1
Standing tall against one of the top offenses in the country, Fordham allowed just a single run on a solo shot in the bottom of the first, as Olivia Simcoe kept the game within a run from there through the end of the fourth inning.
Fordham drew level at one in the top of the fifth, as Allie Clark came around to score on an RBI double by Sydney Wells. Answering quickly South Carolina tallied a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame, and rallied for six in the following inning to win the game by run rule, 9-1.
Game Two: UNLV 3, Fordham 2
Playing as the visitors again in game two, Neleh Nogay started the Rams off with a base hit on the first at-bat under the lights, scoring later in the frame on an RBI groundout from Wells to put Fordham in front.
Doubling the Rams' advantage in the top of the fifth, Morgan Volgraf tallied her first career RBI on a single to right field, scoring fellow freshman Sophie Nesturrick to make it 2-0.
Elizabeth Gaisior would not allow a run through her first four innings of work, before UNLV answered in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run to pull within one. The Rebels put a runner on in the bottom of the seventh with one out, before blasting a walk off two run shot over the left field wall to win 3-2 in the nightcap.
Fordham wraps up the Garnet and Black Invitational tomorrow morning with a single game against Boston University at 10:00 a.m.
