Men’s Track & Field Ends Up Ninth at A-10 Championship

Rams Score in Seven Events on Sunday; Set School Record in the 4x100 Relay

Amherst, Mass. – (May 7, 2023) – The 2023 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track & Field Championship has wrapped up at the UMass Track & Field Complex in Amherst, Massachusetts with the Fordham men finishing ninth overall.
 
Rhode Island won the team championship with 172 points, followed by George Mason (148), VCU (138), Davidson (105), Massachusetts (73), Saint Louis (47), La Salle (40), Loyola Chicago (39), Fordham (34), George Washington (26), Saint Joseph's (25), Duquesne (9), and St. Bonaventure (0).
 
Fordham scored in seven events on Sunday, beginning with the 4x100 relay team of Liam Volz, Kenneth Maxwell, Matthew Nurse, and Christian Weddington, as they scored fifth in a school record time of 41.44 seconds, breaking their own mark, set last week at Penn Relays.
 
Weddington scored a second time on Sunday, as he took sixth in the 100-meter dash in 10.72 seconds.
 
Next came the 1,500-meter event, where Colin Flood posted a season-best time of 3:47.71, scoring seventh overall, while Nathan Bezuneh was ninth (3:48.30).  Rodolfo Sanchez grabbed 13th overall in the event in 3:49.92 with Nolan Chiles in 28th (4:02.21).
 
The tandem of Zalen Nelson and Ben Borchers both scored in the 800-meter run with Nelson in fifth place at 1:51.27, followed by Borchers in sixth at 1:51.41.
 
Fordham also scored in the final two relays, starting with Darren Croke, Sanchez, Eric Jacobson, and Borchers taking seventh in the 4x800 relay in a season-best and IC4A qualifying time of 7:41.15.  Then in the 4x400 relay, Kevin Callaghan, Erik Brown, Yariv Simhony, and Nurse scored fifth in a season-best and IC4A qualifying time of 3:16.37.
 
The final track competitors for Fordham were Steven Zucca and Nicholas Grabarz in the 5,000-meter run.  Zucca ended up 15th overall in 14:53.58, while Grabarz was 30th in 15:43.01.
 
The Rams had two athletes finish up the championship in the triple jump and decathlon events.  Justin Rhee was 15th overall in the triple jump with a season-best mark 45' 5 ¾", then in the decathlon, George Pomer scored sixth overall with a point total of 4,706 points.  He was second in the 1,500 meters (4:47.75), fifth in the 110-meter hurdles (16.74), sixth in the discus throw (86' 6"), and seventh in the pole vault (9' 8"). 
 
The Rams will now prep for the ECAC/IC4A Championship, May 13-14, in Fairfax, Virginia.
