Men’s Track & Field in Ninth After Day 1 of A-10 Championship

Steven Zucca Scores Fifth in the 5,000-Meter Run; Three Rams Qualify for Sunday Finals

Kingston, R.I. – (February 25, 2023) – The 2023 Atlantic 10 Indoor Track & Field Championship got underway on Saturday at Mackal Fieldhouse in Kingston, Rhode Island.
 
After five events, George Mason leads with 46 points, followed by Rhode Island (42), VCU (31), Loyola Chicago (19), Saint Louis (15.5), Davidson (13), Saint Joseph's (11), La Salle (9), Fordham (4.5), Massachusetts (4), and St. Bonaventure (0).
 
Fordham scored in two of the five scoring events on Saturday, starting with Michael Croke in the pole vault, as he tied for eighth place, clearing 13' 7 ¾".
 
Then at the end of the night, Steven Zucca scored fifth overall in the 5,000-meter run in a personal-best time of 14:23.88.  Nicolas Grabarz also ran in the event, placing 22nd overall in 15:24.99.
 
Aside from those two events, Fordham also qualified for three Sunday finals and just missed out on two others.
 
First in the 500 meters, Kevin Callaghan qualified for the final in sixth at 1:06.84, while Erik Brown just missed the final in ninth at 1:07.58.
 
The next Sunday qualifier was Zalen Nelson in the 1,000-meter run, as he qualified sixth in 2:29.40, ahead of teammate Ben Borchers, who was 12th overall in 2:31.39.
 
Then, Christian Weddington qualified for the 200-meter dash final in seventh at 22.24 seconds, after just missing the 60-meter dash final in ninth at 7.02 seconds.  Matthew Nurse also ran in the 200 meters, placing 15th in 22.79 seconds, while just missing the finals of the 400-meter dash in ninth in 50.34 seconds.
 
Fordham also has a chance to score in the men's heptathlon on Sunday, as through four events, George Pomer is eighth with 2,119 points.  In those four events, Pomer was eighth in the 60 meters (8.08), seventh in the long jump (19' 0"), eighth in the shot put (25' 6"), and fourth in the high jump (6' 1 ½").
 
In other events, Yariv Simhony finished 15th in the 800-meter run, with Eric Galante (21' 7 ¼") and Justin Rhee (21' 4 ¼") placing 11th and 15th, respectively, in the long jump event.
 
The Championship concludes on Sunday at 11 AM.
