Newport News, Va. – After sweeping Rhode Island over the weekend, Fordham softball saw two student-athletes earn Atlantic 10 weekly honors –
Rachel Hubertus as the Co-Player of the Week, sharing the award with Saint Louis' Gabbie Kowalik, and
Devon Miller with her fourth career Pitcher of the Week accolade.
For Hubertus, this is her second weekly award and first since February 2019. The Short Hills, N.J. native was tremendous over the weekend, slashing .545/.545/.909 with two hits in each contest, finishing 6-for-11 with four RBIs, the final of which came on a mammoth solo home run in Sunday's series finale that gave her exactly 30 career home runs and 100 career RBIs, the former number now solo eighth all-time in program history. The weekend brought her up to an even .600 slugging percentage, as well, fifth-highest all-time. Hubertus is in the midst of another stellar campaign, slashing .325/.404/.649 with a league-leading eight home runs and more walks (11) than strikeouts (8).
"It was good to see Rachel take a lot of good and powerful swings this weekend as she did a great job being aggressive, yet disciplined at the plate." Head coach
Melissa Inouye said, "She's definitely put in the extra time as she's always taking extra batting practice and it's so nice to see her hard work pay off."
Miller bookended the series and across 12.0 total innings, the reigning A-10 Rookie of the Year allowed just one run while striking out 13. The junior notched her eighth career shutout, also solo eighth in program history, with five strikeouts over five frames, allowing six baserunners. On Sunday, Miller was even sharper, striking out eight and allowing just two baserunners, one a solo home run. For the season so far, she is up to 4-8 with a 3.47 ERA and 64 strikeouts over 66.2 innings. She also contributed at the plate this weekend, batting 5-of-7, including a career-best 4-for-4 effort on Sunday. Between the two games, she also drove in three teammates and scored twice.
"Devon had some good and specific bullpen work in the last week and it showed in how well she spun the ball this weekend." She's in a better rhythm now with pitching more often and has done a better job of communicating about her pitches in games."
Fordham improved to 12-13 overall on the year and 4-4 in league play. The Rams next host Iona this Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Bahoshy Field before heading up to UMass for three games this weekend.
