Fordham’s Fiona Murtagh Medals at 2020 Olympic Games

Former Ram rower places third with Irish women’s four

Bronx, N.Y. - Former Fordham University rower Fiona Murtagh, FCRH '16, joined an elite group of Fordham alumni, as she became the fourth Ram to win an Olympic medal when her Irish women's coxless four finished third at the 2020 Olympic Games on Wednesday in Tokyo.

Australia won the women's coxless four gold medal with the Netherlands right behind the Aussies. Murtagh's Irish shell, who won the country's first medal of Tokyo 2020, surged past Great Britain to earn bronze.

Murtagh joins Fordham Athletic Hall of Famers John Mulcahy, FCRH 1894, Joe McCluskey, FCRH '33, and Tom Courtney, FCRH '55, in winning Olympic medals.

Mulcahy partnered with William Varley to capture gold and silver medals at the 1904 Olympic Games in St. Louis in the double sculls and pair without coxswain events.

McCluskey earned a bronze medal in the steeplechase in the 1932 Summer Olympics. Over his career, he won more United States track and field titles than any other runner.

Courtney won the 1956 Final Trials in a new American record of 1:46.4 and then went on to set a new Olympic record of 1:47.7 in winning the Melbourne final. Courtney won a second Olympic gold with a 45.7 anchor leg in the 4×400 relay.

Former Ram pitcher Nick Martinez will attempt to become the fourth Ram to earn an Olympic medal when the U.S. baseball squad opens play in Tokyo against Israel on Friday.
