Harrisonburg, Va. (May 16, 2015) – Though the Fordham softball program had defeated #3 Alabama at Bahoshy Field in 2012, that win's significance may have been surpassed three years later when the Rams defeated nationally-ranked James Madison, eliminating the Dukes from their NCAA Regional and advancing to a second-ever Regional Final. To get there, Fordham also defeated fourth-seeded Binghamton, 8-0, in five innings right before.
Against the Bearcats in the late afternoon at Veterans Memorial Park, redshirt junior Rachel Gillen was in complete command, tossing a two-hit shutout with six strikeouts. The Rams produced 11 hits with sophomore Lindsay Mayer leading the way with a 3-for-3 performance, a home run, four RBI, and two runs, and sophomore Amy Van Hoven and senior Kayla Lombardo each going 2-for-2. Mayer's two-run bomb in the first, scoring Sydney Canessa, was all the offense they'd need.
Less than an hour later, the Rams and Dukes took the field looking to advance to face North Carolina State in the final, each needing consecutive victories to advance to the NCAA Super Regional. Facing future four-time All-American Megan Good, in her freshman season, the Rams never trailed, going ahead on Mayer's second home run of the day and ninth of the year with two outs in the bottom of the third. Good held the Rams to just four hits overall, with Mayer accounting for two. Good entered the day with just two losses and a 1.02 ERA, but the combination of Mayer and senior Michele Daubman in the circle handed her her third loss and ended the Dukes' season.
Daubman was near flawless for six frames before the Dukes broke through for an unearned run in the seventh. James Madison put runners on second and third with one out after a pair of singles and a throwing error. Junior Patti Maloney came on in relief and came up big by limiting the Dukes to just one run on a sacrifice fly before seeing the game out with a groundout to Mayer at third.
The Rams advanced to a rematch with the Wolfpack, but fell, 2-1, after taking a 1-0 lead in the opening frame and despite another terrific Gillen performance, ending their season with a 38-20 record.
