Fordham Athletics Director Dave Roach Appointed To Organizing Committee For Upcoming Global Games

World University Games to be held in 2023 in Lake Placid

Bronx, N.Y. - The United States International University Sports Federation (USIUSF) has appointed David Roach to serve on the Lake Placid 2023 World University Winter Games Organizing Committee (LP23). Roach, a member of the USIUSF Board of Directors, is a long-time collegiate sports administrator and current Director of Athletics at Fordham University in New York City.
 
The World University Games, one of the largest global multisport competitions is conducted under the auspices of the Switzerland-based International University Sport Federation (FISU) and staged biennially in different cities around the world. The Winter Games bring together elite student-athletes from more than 60 nations to compete in various sports and events including alpine, freestyle and cross-country skiing; biathlon, speed skating, curling, figure skating, hockey, short track speed skating and snowboarding. Two-time Winter Olympic host city Lake Placid, was awarded the 2023 Games during the September 2018 meeting of the FISU Executive Committee, following a 3-year exploration and bid process. Lake Placid was the last US host of this event in 1972.
 
Roach who brings a wealth of experience, and expertise to LP23, has led Fordham Athletics since 2012. Prior to that appointment, he served 8 years as the Director of Athletics at Colgate University, and 14 years at the helm of Brown University Athletics. Prior to his time as an athletic director, Roach served as the head swimming coach at the University of Tennessee from 1986-1990 and at Brown from 1978-1986. At Tennessee, he was named SEC Coach of the Year in 1988 and 1989, coached 26 All-Americans and had a 23-13-1 dual meet record. As the head coach at Brown, Roach guided the Bruins to a 74-6-1 dual meet record, three Ivy League team championships and two Eastern team titles. A former collegiate swimmer from Springfield College, Roach has been acknowledged with many honors, including the Springfield College Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2018, as well as induction into the Rhode Island Aquatic Hall of Fame in 1988 and Brown University Hall of Fame in 1989. No stranger to the World University Games, Roach was appointed in 1985 to coach the US National Swim Team at the Summer Games in Kobe, Japan.
