With the 2020 fall sports season canceled by the COVID-19 outbreak, we at Fordham have decided to dig back through our archives and provide our fans with content on some of the outstanding teams and student-athletes who have graced Rose Hill over the years.
November 2, 1935 – (New York) –
The Ram article - It's been said that the television show
Seinfeld was a show about nothing. But 54 years before the show premiered there was another event that was about nothing. Fordham-Pittsburgh football games.
The Rams and the Panthers played three straight scoreless ties in the 1930's, beginning with a 0-0 game 85 years ago today at the Polo Grounds.
It was the first meeting between the two schools and Fordham fans turned out in droves to see Fordham take on one of the top teams in the country. The Rams didn't disappoint their faithful, handing Pittsburgh its first shutout since the 1928 season. Not only that but the Panthers were known for peaking in November, having dropped just two of their 40 November games in the previous eleven years.
Fordham entered the game as the underdog but the Ram defense was the story of the game, holding the Panthers to just 73 yards of total offense (just four of those passing yards) and intercepted the Pitt quarterback four times.
The Fordham offense was able to move the ball and had two chances to score but Andy Palau missed on two field goal attempts. The Rams amassed 160 yards of total offense, more than Notre Dame managed against the Panthers earlier in the year.
At the end of the game Fordham fans were so excited about tying one of the best teams in the nation they rushed the field and tore down the goal posts.
The two schools would play to scoreless ties again in 1936 and 1937 before Pittsburgh won the 1938 meeting, 24-13.
