Baseball Set For Four-Game Series at UMES

Rams & Hawks Get Games Started Friday at 2:30 PM

Princess Anne, Md. – (February 28, 2019) – For the third consecutive weekend, the Fordham baseball team will see an opponent the team has never seen before, as the Rams take on the Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks in a four-game series, beginning on Friday at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium Salisbury in Princess Anne, Maryland.
 
The series breaks down with a single game on Friday, a doubleheader on Saturday, and a single game on Sunday.
 
The Rams (2-5) look to continue the momentum from last weekend, as Fordham won two of the final three-games against North Florida.

SERIES HISTORY: Fordham has never played Maryland Eastern Shore.
 
LAST TIME OUT: Five Fordham Rams had multi-hit games, while John Stankiewicz pitched a solid four innings out of the bullpen, as the Rams won the series final at North Florida, 8-6, at Harmon Stadium in Jacksonville, Florida.
 
Fordham opened the scoring with a three-run second inning, as the Rams loaded the bases on an error and two hits.  Billy Godrick plated the first run with a sacrifice fly, while Justin Machado laid down the sacrifice bunt to score the second run.  Then, Jake Guercio picked up an RBI-single to center, scoring Nick Labella.
 
North Florida responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning, but the Rams responded with two runs in the top of the third to maintain the three-run lead at 5-2  Jake MacKenzie led off with a single and one out later came around to score on an RBI-double by Alvin Melendez.  Melendez later scored on an RBI-single from Justin Bardwell.
 
The two teams traded home runs in the fifth to make it 6-3.  Jake Baker connected on his first home run of the season to right for Fordham, while Jay Prather did the same for the Ospreys.
 
Fordham tacked on another run in the eighth on an RBI-double by Bardwell, but North Florida rallied for three runs in the bottom of the frame to make it a one-run ballgame at 7-6.  The Rams had the answer in the ninth, picking up an insurance run on an RBI-single from Melendez, while Kyle Martin was able to close out the game for the 8-6 win.

For Fordham, John Stankiewicz (1-0) earned the win, tossing four innings, allowing just one earned run and striking out four, while Martin recorded his first save, posting two strikeouts in 1.2 innings of work.  At the plate, Bardwell was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI, while Baker was 2-for-5 with a double, a home run, and two runs scored. Melendez, Tarabek, and Labella also had multi-hit games for the Rams.
 
FORDHAM TO HOST 2019 ATLANTIC 10 CHAMPIONSHIP: For the fourth time, Fordham's Houlihan Park will serve as the host site for the Atlantic 10 Championship.  It will take place May 22nd through May 25th.  Previously, the Rams hosted in 2006, 2012, and 2016.
 
RAMS CELEBRATE 160th ANNIVERSARY: The Fordham baseball team celebrates the 160th anniversary of the creation of the team in 2019.  The Rams or "Rose Hills" as they were known as began play in 1859 and stand as the NCAA's all-time wins leader with 4,479 over 158 seasons, entering 2019. (The Rams did not field a team in 1944 due to World War II).
 
WHO'S NEXT: The Rams will next be in action on March 8-10, as Fordham will host a round robin weekend at Houlihan Park with Hofstra and Iona.  Fordham will start the weekend against Iona on Friday, March 8th at noon, followed by a game with Hofstra at 4:00 PM.  The Rams then take on the Gaels for a second time on Saturday, March 9th, at 3:00 PM, while facing the Pride on Sunday, March 10th, at noon.
