Gaitley, Cavanaugh, and Davis Earn All-Metropolitan Honors

Gaitley Named Coach of the Year for a Second Time, Cavanaugh Rookie of the Year

MBWA Release

NEW YORK – The Metropolitan Basketball Writers' Association (MBWA) revealed its annual Division I end-of-season honors and the Fordham women's basketball program was well-represented. Head coach Stephanie Gaitley was named the Maggie Dixon Coach of the Year for a second time of her Fordham tenure, redshirt freshman Bre Cavanaugh earned Rookie of the Year and Second Team honors, and senior G'mrice Davis again earned First Team recognition for a second straight year. Rutgers' Tyler Scaife was named Player of the Year.

Gaitley, already the program's winningest head coach since February, 2017, extended her record on Rose Hill to 144-86 (.626 win pct.), guided the Rams to a 24-10 record and third-place finish in the Atlantic 10. The team reached the A-10 Championship quarterfinals and matched the program's longest run in the WNIT, making it to the Sweet Sixteen before falling on the road at Virginia Tech. As is typical with a Gaitley-led Rams team, Fordham allowed just 56.5 points per contest, ranked 15th in the nation by season's end. The Rams were also 21st in free-throw percentage (76.6%), just 0.3 behind the single-season record, and made 186 three-point field goals, fourth-most in school history. Gaitley also celebrated her 600th career win in front of friends and family and now sits on a 608-356 career coaching record (.631 win pct.). She previously was named All-MET Coach of the Year in 2013.

"I think any award is a culmination of many things," said Gaitley, "I'm fortunate to have some great players, a super staff, and a committed administration. You're only as good as those you surround yourself with!"

Cavanaugh earned Atlantic 10 Second Team All-Conference and All-Rookie distinction after a sintilating rookie campaign in the Bronx. Cavanaugh led the Rams with 17.0 points per game, ranked sixth in the league and 41st in the country, and finished with 578 points eighth-most in a single campaign. She bested nearly every freshman school record except for Hall of Famer Anne Gregory's historic 1976-77 campaign. Cavanaugh shot 84.8% from the line, set a freshman record of 34 starts, and finished the year with the second-most minutes played among any Ram, ever, only bested by Lauren Holden this season. The Allamuchy, N.J. native also tallied 67 three-pointers, 41 steals, 60 assists, and 4.7 rebounds per game, while notching four 30-point performances on the year, one of which came in a dramatic come-from-behind win in the second round of the WNIT at Drexel.

"Bre continued to grow as a player as the season went along. She has great potential and a winning work ethic. This combination means a lot of great things to come!"

Davis will graduate from Fordham in May as one of the program's best players. The Philadelphia native became the second Ram to score 1,000 career points and haul in 1,000 career rebounds, finishing her four-year career with 1,497 points and 1,199 boards, ranked fourth and second all-time, respectively, in school history. Davis averaged a double-double over her final two seasons in maroon and white, improving upon her junior season numbers to average 16.5 points and 13.4 rebounds as a senior.

Davis finished her senior campaign second in the nation with 10.2 rebounds per contest, third with 13.4 boards and 27 double-doubles, and fourth with 429 total rebounds, and is tied with two others for most career double-doubles (57) among all active players.

The star forward will also finish her career fourth with both 589 field goals and 319 free throws, seventh in appearances, with 125, and ninth with 96 starts. She just recently signed a training camp deal with the reigning WNBA champion Minnesota Lynx, which you can read more about here.

"It is great to see 'G' cap off her career with another postseason appearance and well-deserved awards."
