Women’s Soccer Wraps Up Non-League Action on Thursday at UConn

Rams Cap Off Non-League Action Against the Huskies

Bronx, N.Y. - Before league action starts next week, the Fordham women's soccer team has one final non-conference test on their schedule, which comes on Thursday night, when the Rams travel to Storrs, Connecticut for a game against the UConn Huskies at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium

Much like their last opponent, the Rams (5-2-1) will have their hands full with UConn (7-2-0), who boast a goal against average under one, and two prolific scorers on offesne in Stephanie Ribeiro and Rachel Hill.  The duo has scored 12 of the Huskies 14 goals this season with Ribeiro having five game-winning goals.

SERIES HISTORY: This is first meeting between Fordham and UConn in women's soccer.  However, Fordham has played in Storrs, Connecticut before, appearing in the 2002 UConn Classic, where the Rams faced off with Maryland and Hartford.

BALANCED SCORING: This season, a total of nine different Rams have registered a goal and 13 have at least one point. Of those nine goal scorers, freshman Margaret Roughley leads the way with three tallies, while sophomore Brooke Salmon and senior Nicole Bates each have two.

LAST TIME OUT (9/18): Hofstra's Jill Mulholland and Kristin Desmond each had a goal and an assist in the first half, leading the Pride to a 2-1 win over the Fordham Rams at Jack Coffey Field on Sunday, snapping the Rams' four-match win streak.

The scoring started in the 15th minute, as Hofstra scored the opening goal of the game.  Jill Mulholland hit a cross from the left side, which off two bounces, Kristin Desmond deflected into the net for her fourth goal of the season.

Fordham came back to tie the score at one on a set piece in the 32nd minute.  Brianna Blunck took the corner kick for Fordham on the right side, hitting a low liner toward the front of goal.  Amanda Miller then used some fancy footwork to collect, turn, and fire in her first collegiate goal from three yards out.

Hofstra got the lead back in the 37th minute, as the same combination of Mulholland and Desmond struck for the Pride.  This time, Desmond put a half volley lead pass for Mulholland, who stopped and fired from 20 yards out, just inside the right post for her team-leading seventh goal of the year.

The Rams had their chances in the second half to tie the game, as Lane Cronin and Nicol Natale had prime scoring chances in the 53rd and 58th minutes, respectively.  However, Hofstra goalkeeper Friederike Mehring, who came in at halftime, made a diving save to the right post to stop Cronin, and then stopped Natale right on the doorstep at the left post.

Mehring kept Fordham off the scoresheet to close out the 2-1 win for the Pride, as she finished with three saves in relief of Ashley Wilson, while Adaeze Obinelo had four saves for Fordham.

WHO'S NEXT: The Rams kick off Atlantic 10 action in their next contest, as Fordham will play at Rhode Island on Thursday, September 29th, beginning at 7:00 PM.
