Eugene, Ore. – The Fordham softball team's season came to an end with a 9-1 loss at the hands of the Long Beach State 49ers in the Eugene Regionals elimination game on Saturday evening at Jane Sanders Stadium. Nichole Fry's sacrifice fly in the second inning, after starting the game with a first inning solo home run, proved to be the eventual game winner. With the loss, the Rams finish their season at 39-21.
Rachel Gillen made her final appearance in maroon and white, her 101
st career start, but took the loss, moving to 16-12 on the year. Gillen finishes her career in the top five in nearly every single pitching category.
Sydney Canessa scored Fordham's lone run on the day with a towering solo home run down the left field line in the fifth inning to cut the deficit at the time to five runs, 6-1.
Fordham was stifled by Christina Clermont and Selene Polamalu, tallying just two other hits on the day, plus two walks and a hit by pitch, but couldn't string together any rallies except in the second inning when
Amy Van Hoven doubled to left center with one out and Canessa singled up the middle to put runners on the corners. However, both
Lindsay Mayer and Gillen struck out to end the frame. Canessa's home run would be the only other hit.
Despite the results in their fifth-ever trip to NCAA Regionals, the Rams finish the season as a top 65 team in the country in terms of RPI and boast three of four major Atlantic 10 award winners plus a school record 13 postseason honorees spanning the major awards, First and Second team selections, All-Rookie members, and All-Academic members.
