Box Score Just a day after being named the team captains for the 2015 season, Fordham's
Jessica Widmann,
Kristina Maksuti, and
Kate McDonnell led the way in the Rams' season opening match against Wagner on Friday. Widmann and Maksuti both scored, while McDonnell had a pair of assists, as Fordham topped Wagner, 2-0, at Mahaney Diamond in Orono, Maine.
The win marked the first season opening win for the Rams since a 1-0 win over Seton Hall to open the 2010 season.
After a scoreless first half, Fordham cracked the scoreboard in the 63
rd minute.
Jessica Widmann received a pass from
Kate McDonnell right in front of the goal, which she tapped over the goalkeeper to the left post from three yards out for her first of the season.
Jessica Widmann scored the Rams'
first goal of the season on Friday. The Rams then got the all-important insurance goal in the 87
th minute, as McDonnell set up a shot for
Kristina Maksuti from 10 yards out inside the left post for her first of the season. The goal for Maksuti was her first tally for the Rams in almost two years, as she made her triumphant return to the pitch for the first time since August 25
th, 2013, after suffering a myriad of injuries.
The tally moved Maksuti into a tie for sixth all-time at Fordham in goals with Annie Worden (2009-12) at 18, as well as into a tie for seventh in all-time points at Rose Hill with Worden, Haley Lentsch (2005-06), and Corey Dunfey (2001-04) at 44.
The Fordham defense was rock solid in the game, giving up just two corner kicks and five shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper
Megan Fitzgerald handled all five chances to pick up her second career shutout. Her only other shutout came in the 2013 season finale against Duquesne.

rd, as Fordham takes on Maine at 2:00 PM.
