Complete ResultsIt was a busy home opener for the Fordham swimming & diving teams, as the Rams hosted both the Fairfield Stags and the Monmouth Hawks at the Messmore Aquatic Center on Friday night. Though busy, Fordham made it a successful night posting a clean sweep of the Stags and Hawks.
The Fordham women earned a 168-45 win over Monmouth and a 162-121 victory against Fairfield, while the men defeated Monmouth, 178-55, and Fairfield 166.5-115.5.
The Fordham women earned wins in all 16 events on Friday, led by
Kalena Laurent,
Natalie Malicki, and
Wendy Espina-Esquivel, who each won two individual events. Laurent won both the 100 (58.95) and 200 butterfly (2:08.19) events, with Malicki taking first in both distance freestyle event (1000 – 10:53.05; 500 – 5:18.37). Espina-Esquivel grabbed the top spot in both diving competitions, scoring 279.30 on the one-meter board and 281.10 on the three-meter board.
The Rams had eight other event winners on the women's side, including
Erin McBride in the 200 freestyle (1:56.50),
Morgan Fairclough in the 100 backstroke (57.64),
Gabrielle Celia in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.58),
Shannon Lulley in the 50 freestyle (24.42),
Megan Gray (53.64),
Julia Day in the 200 backstroke (2:09.65),
Anna Marshall in the 200 breaststroke (2:29.04), and
Megan Polaha in the 400 individual medley (4:31.35).
In relay action, Fordham's team of Fairclough, Celia, S. Lulley, and
Chandler Lulley won the 200 medley relay in 1:48.15, while the Lulley sisters, joined Gray and McBride to win the 200 freestyle in 1:38.09.
In the men's competition, Fordham placed first in 12 of 16 events, led by
Steve Sholdra, who won three individual events. He grabbed the top spot in the 1000 freestyle (9:32.08), 200 butterfly (1:50.28), and the 400 individual medley (4:01.37).
Liam Semple The Rams had seven other individual on the night, which included
Chris Viera in the 200 freestyle (1:46.62),
John Furlong in 100 breaststroke (1:01.87),
Thomas Shetler in the 50 freestyle (21.70),
Jack Madigan in the 100 freestyle (49.27),
Rhett Karopoulos in the 200 backstroke (1:55.94),
Isiah Magsino in the 200 breaststroke (2:13.62), and
Liam Semple in the 500 freestyle (4:41.96).
In the relays, the 200 medley relay team of
J.T. Klimko,
Robert Simkins, Matthew Luther, and
Christopher Daniell took first in 1:37.17, while Semple,
Scott Brown, Daniel, and Shetler won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:27.97.
The Fordham women's swimming & diving team will next be in action on Friday, October 30
th, when the Rams host Army West Point at 5:00 PM, while the next men's meet is at Boston University on November 7
th.
