The Fordham Water Polo team (10-10, 2-4 CWPA) is back on the round and looking towards revenge during a vital Northern Division clash at Iona (3-8, 2-4 CWPA) on Wednesday evening, October 21. The Gaels have had 13 days off since their thrilling 12-11 overtime victory in the Bronx.
Since that encounter with Iona two weeks ago, the Rams have only battled #18 St. Francis Brooklyn in Brooklyn Heights last Wednesday night, a 10-9 loss that came down to the final few moments. Fordham has had a series of matches that have gone down to the wire, including two against ranked opponents.
Six different Rams got on the scoresheet –
Bobby Wurtz,
Andrew Gonzalez (3),
Patrick Reyes,
Cameron Shewchuck,
R.J. Simmons (2), and
Magnus Sims.
The goals for Gonzalez extends an impressive stretch for the senior in which he has scored 24 times in the team's last 13 matches – dating back to a clash against George Washington on September 13. Gonzalez has increased his scoring by one goal over his last three contests after being held scoreless for two straight matches in California that had snapped a streak of at least one in eight straight matches.
Over that same span, Simmons has notched 25 goals, as the two upperclassmen easily pace the Rams in scoring.
The Rams play host to the Gaels and three other schools this weekend, with six matches planned across two days at the Francis B. Messmore Aquatics Center. On Friday, October 23, Fordham will host Salem International at 8 p.m., before playing George Washington and Mercyhurst on Saturday at 11 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., respectively.
