With the regular season opener just over a week away, the Fordham men's soccer team was back on the pitch on Wednesday for their second of three scrimmage contests this preseason. Behind a pair of second half goals and some solid play in goal from senior
Sean Brailey, the Rams netted a 2-1 win over Stony Brook.
"I was happy with our play today," said head coach
Jim McElderry. "Playing on the road, even in the preseason is tough. Our guys followed a plan in terms of playing and competed hard on the defensive side."
After a scoreless first half, transfer
Tomas Penfold netted the opening goal of the contest in the first few minutes of the second stanza. The ball popped out to the top of the box for Penfold, who blasted a shot low to the near post for a 1-0 lead.
About 10 minutes later, Fordham scored off a set piece for a 2-0 lead. Off a corner kick, junior
Ryan Walsh flicked in the ball from eight yards out.
Though the Seawolves would strike for a goal with about 15 minutes left, the Rams would hold off Stony Brook behind some stellar defensive play. Senior goalkeeper
Sean Brailey made multiple saves as he played the full 90 minutes.
"Our older players stepped up to lead the group today. We still have much to work on, but we are improving every day," said McElderry.
The Rams will conclude their preseason schedule on Saturday, August 23
rd, as Fordham hosts Vermont, beginning at 2:00 PM on Jack Coffey Field.
