Box Score 2 Â
The Fordham baseball team used the long ball and some late game theatrics on Saturday, posting a doubleheader split with the Delaware Blue Hens in Bel Air, Maryland.
Â
With the split, Fordham is 2-3 on the season, while Delaware is 4-5.
Â
In game one, Fordham fell to Delaware by a 3-1 score.
Â
The Rams opened the scoring in the second inning, as
Charles Galiano hit a solo home run, his first of the season.
Â
The Blue Hens knotted the game at one in the third on a bunt single from Zach Lopes and a double to center by Ty Warrington.
Â
Delaware then picked up a pair of runs in the fifth to lead by a 3-1 count, scoring runs on a fielder's choice from Brock Niggebrugge and a double by Joe Giacchino.
Â
The score remained that way heading to the ninth, where Fordham tried to put together a late rally.Â
Tim Swatek drew a walk, bringing Galiano to the plate as the potential tying run. Galiano though would ground into a double play for the first two outs, and a fielder's choice later in the frame would end the game.
Â
Brett Kennedy (0-2) was the hard luck loser, tossing his first career complete game, allowing three runs on seven hits with five strikeouts over eight innings. At the plate, Fordham managed just three hits, as Galiano was 2-for-4 with a home run, while
Matthew Kozuch had the other hit.
Â
In game two, the Rams rallied for four runs in the seventh to pull out a 5-3 win in seven innings.
Â
Delaware started the scoring in the second, as Jake Clark doubled down the left field line and scored on a double by Lopes.
Â
Fordham knotted the game at one in the fourth, when Swatek connected on a solo home run to right, his second of the season.
Â
The Blue Hens regained the lead in the bottom half of the frame by a 2-1 score. Cameron Travalini walked with one out, stole second, and scored on a single by Lopes.
Â
After Delaware added another run in the bottom of the sixth, Fordham rallied back in the seventh to take a 5-3 lead. Galiano opened the frame with a single and moved to third on a double by McNally.Â
Brendan Maghini then lifted a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Galiano to make it a 3-2 game with McNally taking third. Â
Rob McCunney followed with an RBI-single to left to score McNally and tie the game at three.Â
Â
After
Ryan Phelan reached base on an infield single,
Jason Lundy hit a ball down the line that went under the third baseman's glove, allowing McCunney to score from second and Phelan to move to third. Phelan then scored on a passed ball to make it 5-3 in favor of the Rams.
Â
In the bottom of the seventh, Fordham brought on
Greg Weissert to close out the game, as he got an around the horn double play and a strikeout to earn his first career save.
Â
Fellow freshman
Luke Stampfl (1-0) got the win in relief after pitching the sixth inning.Â
J.C. Porter made the start, allowing two runs on six hits over five innings of work. At the plate, McCunney was 2-for-3 with an RBI, while McNally had a pair of hits.
Â
The same two teams will conclude their three-game series with a single nine-inning game on Sunday at 12:00 PM.
