Results Bronx, N.Y. (November 8, 2014) – The Fordham University men's and women's swimming and diving teams hosted Boston University in the Messmore Aquatic Center on Saturday with the women pulling out a 153.50-146.50 win while the men fell to the Terriers, 178-108.
The women's meet came down to the final relay, the 400 free, where the Fordham team of
Shannon Lulley,
Kalena Laurent,
Theresa Goehring and
Chandler Lulley beat the Boston University team to the touch pad by 1.51 seconds and the second Fordham squad of
Julia Day,
Maureen McKenna,
Megan Zarriello and
Erin McBride took third in 3:38.68, 1.87 seconds ahead of the second Terrier relay to give Fordham the team win.
Megan Polaha led the women with three event wins, taking the 100 fly in 56.59, the 200 fly in 2:03.93 and the 200 IM in 2:06.88.
Victoria McGovern took two events, winning the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.26, just ahead of teammate
Kelly Carroll (1:07.02), and also taking the 200 breaststroke in 2:22.88, over three seconds ahead of the second place finisher.
Other event winners for the Fordham women included
Morgan Fairclough, who won the 100 back in 58.03 with teammate
Spencer Chappell right behind her in 58.75, and
Shannon Lulley, who won the 50 free in 24.47 while her sister, Chandler, placed second in the 100 free in 53.70.
Laurent placed second in the 200 free (1:55.07) while
Spencer Chappell was second in the 200 back (2:06.90).
In the other women's relay, the 200 medley, Fairclough, McGovern, Polaha and
Chandler Lulley took first in 1:48.13 and the team of Chappell, Carroll,
Megan Gray and
Erin McBride placed second in 1:49.31.
The men were led by
Steve Sholdra who won two events and placed second in another. Sholdra won the 1000 free in 9:36.59, almost ten seconds ahead of the runner up from Boston University, and he came back later to win the 200 fly in 1:51.09, almost four seconds ahead of the Terrier second place finisher. He also placed second in the 200 IM in 1:53.70, just 0.58 seconds behind the winner from Boston University.
Liam Semple also won two events for the Rams, taking the 200 free in 1:43.66, with
Patrick Militti placing third (1:46.15), and the 500 free in 4:41.58, over 15 seconds ahead of the second place swimmer from Boston University.
The Fordham women's swimming and diving squad returns to action on Friday, November 14, as they host the LIU Post Pioneers in the Messmore Aquatics Center at 6:00 p.m. before both the men's and women's squads travel to Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, to compete in the Bucknell Invitational from November 21-23.
