Rowing Sweeps Metropolitan Championships

Rams capture gold in every race

Bronx, N.Y. (October 26, 2014) – The Fordham University crew competed at the 2014 Fall Metropolitan Championships on Sunday at the Orchard Beach Lagoon, winning all four races.
 
The varsity 8 easily defeated Fairfield, covering the 2000 meter course in 7:11.3, over 14 seconds in front of the Stags. The Fordham B boat was third (7:32.2) with the Fordham C entry taking fifth (7:54.4).
 
The winning varsity 8 was comprised of Ashleigh Aitchison (stroke), Tecla Di Francesco, Fiona Murtagh, Ashley Hawkesworth, Caroline Hamann, Maura O'Donnell, Courtney Cambria and Nicole Arrato, with Caitlin Sershon at cox.
 
The second varsity was comprised of Jess LaJoie (stroke), Kasia Wlodarkiewicz, Sarah Hoskin, Leslie Fung, Katie Dillon, Kristen Shuman, Maddy Locher and Kerry Egan with Jacquelyn Ramos at coxswain.
 
The third varsity 8 was comprised of Jessica Kammen (stroke), Ariene Merkle, Sammi Spallina, Dena Bussa, Sherry Sanders, Caroline Sneider, Kelly Leonard and Amanda Rossi with Linda Mulé at coxswain.
 
The Fordham varsity 4 of Aitchison (stroke), Di Francesco, Murtagh and Hawksworth, with Shershon at coxswain, also won easily, finishing in 7:29.1, 12 seconds in front of Fairfield.
 
The Rams also entered a boat in the second heat of the varsity 4 where Maura O'Donnell (stroke), Nicole Arrato, Courtney Cambria and Hamann, with Ramos at coxswain, took first in 8:02.2, well ahead of Fairfield.
 
In the novice 8 race, the Fordham shell of Jessica Hammen (stroke), Katie Dillon, Sarah Hoskin, Leslie Fung, Maddy Locher, Kristen Shuman, Ariene Merkle, Dena Bussa, with Liz Klotzbach at coxswain, won going away in 7:14.8, over 30 seconds in front of Iona and over two minutes ahead of Fairfield.
 
In the novice 4, the Fordham entry of Kammen (stroke), Dillon, Hoskin and Fung, with Klotzbach at coxswain, took gold in 8:24.8, well ahead of Iona and Fairfield.
 
The Rams also won the second heat of the novice 4 as Merkle (stroke), Shuman, Locher and Bussa, with Mulé at coxswain, beat Iona to the line by 50 seconds.
