Last Friday, the Fordham women's soccer squad lost their season opener on a penalty kick in overtime.  This Friday, the Fordham men's soccer squad fell victim to the same scenario in its opener, as a late foul call in overtime gave James Madison a penalty kick that the Dukes converted on for a 2-1 win at University Park in Harrisonburg, Virginia.

The match was game two of the Fairfield Inn by Marriott JMU Invitational and it was a highly contested affair.

The play went James Madison way over the first 20 minutes, as the Dukes registered three shots and had two corner kicks.  In the 22nd minute, the Dukes converted for the first goal of the game.  Steven Mashinski put forward a quick pass to Adam Bastidas, who beat Fordham goalkeeper Alex Naples to the left side for his first marker of the season.

The Rams then turned on the intensity, recording three corner kicks over the next five minutes, with the final one resulting in a goal.  With pinpoint accuracy, Andrew Hickey's corner kick bent its way into the goal for his first collegiate goal as a Ram, tying the game at one.

Naples would come up with two saves over the remainder of the first half, leaving the game tied at one, going into halftime.

The second half saw more action on the offensive end for Fordham, getting three more corner kick opportunities, but only on one occasion did JMU netminder Kyle Morton have to make a save.  That came on a shot off the foot of Mike McNamara in the 74th minute.

The match went into overtime, with neither squad scoring in the first ten minutes of the extra frame.  In the second ten minutes, Fordham just missed winning the game as a header by Casper Gimand hit the post in the 104th minute.

Then in the 107th minute, the Dukes setup their fifth corner kick of the match, Fordham's Jon Agostino and James Madison's Mitchell Jordan got tangled up on the play in the box with Agostino getting called for a foul, which awarded the Dukes a penalty kick.  Daniel Roppert then stepped to the penalty spot and beat Naples for the 2-1 decision.

Naples finished the night with three saves for the Rams, while Morton had one for James Madison.

The Fordham men's soccer team will next be in action on Sunday, September 1st, when they conclude the JMU Invitational against Virginia Tech, beginning at noon.
