BRONX, N.Y. – The Fordham University men' s soccer program will welcome back its alumni on Sunday, October 11, when the Rans take on the University of Rhode Island at Moglia Stadium at 5:00 p.m. Among the alumni Fordham will welcome back are members of the 1996 team, a squad that captured Fordham's first Atlantic 10 title.
Despite falling behind at halftime, the Fordham men's soccer team, led by head coach Frank Schnur, rallied for two goals in the second half to defeat top-seeded Rhode Island, 2-1, at the 1996 Atlantic 10 Championship, hosted at Dayton's Baujan Field.
Buoyed by the outstanding 12-save performance by Fordham goalkeeper Jim Grandinetti, the Rams tied the score at one when Todd Vieira put home a cross from John Wolyniec in the 49
th minute.
Just four minutes later, Wolyniec blasted a shot of the post that ricocheted into the goal for a 2-1 lead.
Rhode Island pressured the Fordham defense, mustering 17 shots in the match, but only beat Grandinetti for the one goal, as Fordham claimed its first Atlantic 10 Championship.
Grandinetti was named the MVP of the championship, totaling 17 saves in two matches. He was joined on the All-Championship team by Vieira, Wolyniec, Jay Lonergan, and Robert Zuclich.
