June 2, 2013 - Sacramento, Calif. - After placing third in the lane assignment race on Saturday, the Fordham University lightweight 4 repeated the performance in the Grand Finals at the 2013 IRA Division I National Championship on Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif., to earn Fordham's first IRA medal since 2008.
The Fordham lightweight 4 comprised of Alexandra McDonald (stroke), Courtney Cambria (3), Jenn Amoroso (2) and Megan Sullivan (bow) with Megan Feerick at coxswain crossed the line in a time of 7:46.515, just behind Wisconsin, who won the gold in 7:35.087 and Radcliffe (7:42.753), who took silver. The Rams trailed Princeton with 500 meters to go, then unleashed an extremely strong sprint to overtake the Tigers with open water and close their margin on Wisconsin and Radcliffe. Princeton took fourth (7:50.801) and Stanford finished fifth (7:52.551), two seconds behind Princeton with MIT trailing several lengths behind Stanford (8:20.734).
"In the race for lanes the other crews were fairly quick off the start," said assistant coach Nick Dawe. "We knew we needed to be faster off the line in the final or a tremendous effort would be needed to win. In the final we were battling between 4th and 5th through the first half of the race. In the second half the Fordham rowers did exactly what they needed to do and poured it on in the last 500 to move through Princeton and gain ground on Radcliffe, securing a bronze medal as they crossed the finish line. A lot of hard work was put in over the last few weeks to prepare for the IRA and it was a very well fought race that they can be extremely proud of."
This was the first IRA appearance for the Fordham Lightweights since 2008 when the lightweight 4 earned a bronze medal.
