May 19, 2013 - Castaic Lake, Ca. - Finals are over which means it's time for Fordham University students to head home for summer break, a time when students take on summer jobs, reunite with hometown friends and maybe take a dip in the lake. For Fordham freshman Steve Sholdra (Renton, Wash./H.B. Education (Wash.)) that dip in the lake came early as he competed in the 2013 USA Swimming Open Water National Championships in Castaic Lake, California, where he finished 15th in the 5K race and 17th in the 10K.
Sholdra opened things on Friday by competing in the 10K race which was won by Alex Meyer of Crimson Aquatics in 1:54:58.947. Sholdra placed 17th in a time of 2:02:05.196.
In the 5K race on Sunday, Andrew Gemmell of the Nation's Capital Swim Club won the event in a time of 57:22.07 with Sholdra placing 15th, just over eleven seconds behind Gemmell in 57:33.28.
