VCU's Jackie Ernest scored just over six minutes into the contest, while Emma Kruse made two saves as VCU topped the Fordham Rams, 1-0, at Sports Backers Stadium in Richmond, Virginia.
With the loss, Fordham falls to 3-7-3 overall, 1-2-1 in the Atlantic 10, while VCU improved to 7-4-1 on the year, 2-0 in the league.
VCU wasted little time capitalizing on a set piece in the seventh minute. Taryn Cressy lined up a corner kick from the right side, which found Jackie Ernest for a header that snuck past Fordham goalkeeper
Ally White for her second tally of the season.
Fordham just missed getting the equalizer 11 minutes later. After a foul on VCU, Fordham's
Kelsey Dougherty Howard lined up a free kick from 22 yards out. Her shot looked destined for the upper 90 of the goal, but VCU keeper Emma Kruse punched the shot over the crossbar to keep Fordham off the scoreboard.
Besides the Dougherty Howard shot, Fordham managed only four more shots the rest of the contest with the best chance to tie coming from
Jessica Widmann in the 77
th minute, but Kruse again made the save.
In net, Kruse finished with two saves for the shutout, while White made one save for Fordham.
The Fordham women's soccer team will next be in action on Sunday, October 13
th, when the Rams travel to George Mason for a 4:00 PM match.
