It was a night and day doubleheader for the Fordham baseball team at St. Bonaventure on Saturday. In game one, Fordham allowed three home runs to St. Bonaventure's Jesse Bosnik in an 11-7 loss, while in game two, Fordham's Max Krakowiak threw a complete game six-hitter with a career-high 11 strikeouts in a 9-1 win by Fordham.
With the split, Fordham moves to 9-20 overall, 4-4 in the Atlantic 10, while St. Bonaventure goes to 5-17 overall, 1-7 in the league.
In game one, the Bonnies' Jesse Bosnik was the story, hitting three home runs and driving in six in an 11-7 win by St. Bonaventure.
St. Bonaventure opened with a 3-0 lead on Fordham starter J.P. Mack, as Bosnik hit a three-run home run in the first inning.
After trading runs in the second, Fordham took a 5-4 lead in the top of third with a four-run outburst. After two strikeouts and a walk, Ryan McCrann singled through the right side, moving Ryan Lee to third. Chris Walker then singled to center, scoring Lee with McCrann going to third. Angelo Ponte followed with a two-run double to center, scoring McCrann and Walker to tie the game. Brian Kownacki then drove in Ponte with a single to center for his second RBI of the game and the 5-4 lead.
The Bonnies however responded with a three-run third, highlighted by an RBI-triple by Brad Steinbach to take a 7-5 lead.
Bosnik then hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth to extend the Bonnies lead to 9-5.
Fordham looked to get back into the game in the top of the sixth, as Ponte hit a solo home run, his first of the year, to pull the Rams within three, 9-6.
St. Bonaventure answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning, as Bosnik hit a solo home run, his third of the game, while Billy Urban had an RBI-single later in the frame, giving the Bonnies an 11-6 lead.
The Rams got a run back in the eighth, to close within four, but couldn't come all the way back.
Mack (0-4) lasted only two innings, allowing five earned runs on five hits, while reliever John Flanagan threw 4.2 innings of relief, giving up five runs on nine hits with Rich Anastasi throwing the final 1.1 innings, allowing just one hit.
At the plate, Ponte was 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and three RBI, while Kownacki was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
In game two, Fordham's Max Krakowiak was the shining star, pitching a complete game six-hitter with a career-high 11 strikeouts, as Fordham took a 9-1 decision.
After giving up a single run in the first, Krakowiak (2-3) allowed only two runners to reach third base over the final eight innings of the game. He also struck out two batters in an inning four times in the game, as he topped his previous career-high of eight strikeouts with 11 in the game.
With the game knotted at one in the third, Fordham put two runs across to take a 3-1 lead, highlighted by an RBI-single by McCrann.
The Rams added to that lead with two runs in the seventh, as Nick Martinez led off with a walk, followed by a Mike Mobbs single. After a stolen base by Martinez, Walker came through with an RBI-single to scoring Martinez with Mobbs going to second. After a sacrifice bunt and an intentional walk, Ryan Lee connected on a single to right to score Mobbs from third.
Fordham then put the game away with four runs in the ninth for a 9-1 victory. In that inning, Fordham received RBI-singles from Lee, Ryan Maghini, and Martinez to highlight the rally.
For the game, Walker and Lee each had a pair of RBI, while Mobbs was 2-for-4 with a double, a stolen base, and three runs scored.
The two teams will play the series finale on Sunday, beginning at noon.
