St. Bonaventure, N.Y. -
For the third straight weekend, the Fordham baseball team put itself in position to win their Atlantic 10 weekend series. Unlike last weekend where the Rams dropped a pair of one-run games, Fordham came through with a 5-4 win at St. Bonaventure on Sunday behind three shutout innings of relief by four Fordham relievers and Ryan Maghini's RBI-single in the top of the sixth inning.
With the win, Fordham improves to 10-20 overall, 5-4 in the Atlantic 10, while St. Bonaventure falls to 5-18 overall, 1-8 in the league.
Fordham wasted little time getting to St. Bonaventure starter Robert Nalepa, scoring three times in the top of the first inning. Fordham loaded the bases with one out on two walks and an error, when Chris Walker knocked out a two-run double, his team-leading 15th of the season, scoring Ryan Lee and Brian Kownacki. Angelo Ponte followed with an RBI-single down the left field line to score Ryan McCrann.
After the Bonnies closed to 3-2 in the bottom of the second, Fordham extended its lead to 5-2 with single runs in the third and sixth innings. In the third, Mike Mobbs led off with a single, and moved to second on a single by Walker. After a flyout, Nick Martinez singled up the middle to score Mobbs for a 4-2 lead.
Ryan Maghini made it 5-2 in the sixth with an RBI-single to score Martinez, who was hit by a pitch, and went to second on a single by P.J. Como.
St. Bonaventure pulled within 5-4 in the seventh, getting an RBI-double by Nick Cunliffe and an RBI-single from Billy Urban. The Fordham bullpen however would anchor down the Bonnies, as
Jordan Grangard came in with the bases loaded later in the seventh to get a force out and end the St. Bonaventure threat.
After a perfect eighth by Grangard, Eric Steinbach started the ninth for St. Bonaventure with a single, which brought Jesse Bosnik to the plate, who had three home runs in the series opener. Reliever Rich Anastasi came in for Grangard and got Bosnik to fly out for the first out of the inning.
After a walk to Nick Brennen, reliever Daniel Munday came in for Anastasi, retiring Urban on a fly ball to right, while inducing a ground ball by Ryan Skellie, which forced Brennen at second to win the game for Fordham.
Munday posted his first save of the season, as Brian Pendergast recorded his third win of the season for the Rams, allowing four runs on six hits with six strikeouts in six innings.
At the plate, Maghini was 3-for-4 with three singles and an RBI, while Mobbs, Walker and Ponte were each 2-for-5.
The Fordham baseball team will next be in action on Tuesday, April 13th, when they conclude a five-game road swing at Rutgers, beginning at 3:30 PM.
