Port St. Lucie, Fla. -
After a tight game on Friday, it was an offensive barrage by the Michigan Wolverines on Saturday, as Michigan's Coley Crank, Derek Dennis and Garrett Stephens each drove in at least five runs, while the team had nine stolen bases on the afternoon in a doubleheader sweep of the Fordham Rams at Tradition Field in Port St. Lucie, Florida.
The afternoon began with Michigan's Alan Oaks giving up two runs in 7.1 innings, while Garrett Stephens had four RBI at the plate, as the Wolverines posted a 13-2 win over the Rams.
Michigan (9-9) opened with a 2-0 lead in the first, as Patrick Biondi opened the frame with a walk, stole second, and scored on a triple by Chris Berset. Berset then scored on an RBI-ground out by Coley Crank.
Fordham (4-14) cut the lead in half in the second, as Chris Walker led off with a double to center, and moved to third on a single by Angelo Ponte. Brian Kownacki then ripped a double to right, scoring Walker with Ponte moving to third. The Rams though could not take further advantage, as Stephen McSherry's fly ball was not deep enough to score on for the first out of the inning. Joe Russo then struck out on a dropped third strike, which as Michigan made the play at first, Ponte took off from third, but was tagged out for the double play.
Michigan got that run back in the bottom of the frame on an RBI-ground out by Stephens, and then tacked six more runs in the third for a 9-1 lead. Highlighting the third, Stephens hit a bases loaded triple to left center, and later scored on a ground out.
The score remained 9-1 until the sixth, where Fordham scratched a run across. Mike Mobbs was hit by a pitch to open the inning, and was pinch run for by Ryan Lee. After a single by McCrann moved Lee to third, Lee scored on a double play ball.
Michigan ensured the win with four runs in the eighth, highlighted by a two-run double by Berset, giving the Wolverines a 13-2 win.
On the mound, Fordham's Max Krakowiak (0-3) went the first six innings, allowing seven earned runs on eight hits, while Joseph Charest gave up four runs on five hits in two innings of relief.
At the plate, McCrann and Ponte each had a pair of hits for Fordham.
In game two, it was all Michigan, as Crank, Dennis, and Mike Kittle each had four RBI in a 20-0 decision.
The Wolverines wasted little time in scoring six runs in the first inning, as the team stole four bases with Crank hitting a three-run home run to highlight the scoring.
Michigan added to the lead with one in the third and two in the fifth and sixth inning, to pull out to an 11-0 edge.
The Wolverines then sealed the game with a nine-run outburst in the seventh, in which Mike Kittle had a pair of two-run singles in the frame.
Fordham managed six hits in the game, two of which were by McCrann, as the Rams had just one runner reach third base.
In his first career start, freshman Rich Anastasi (0-2) gave up seven runs (four earned) on five hits with four walks.
