Baseball Nipped By Stony Brook in 10 Innings

Bronx, N.Y. - Stony Brook's Pat Cantwell registered the game-winning RBI-double in the top of the tenth inning on Wednesday, as the Seawolves snuck out a 7-6 win in extra innings over the Fordham Rams at Houlihan Park.

With the win, Stony Brook improved to 6-8, while Fordham falls to 4-15.

Stony Brook hit the scoreboard first in the second inning with a pair of runs on an RBI-ground out by by Travis Jankowski and a sacrifice fly by Sal Intagliata.

Fordham cut the deficit in half in the second and then knotted the game at two in the fourth. In the second, Ryan McCrann singled up the middle, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on an RBI-single from Chris Walker. Walker did the damage again in the fourth with an RBI-single, scoring Mike Mobbs, who reached on a single and moved to second on a wild pitch.

Stony Brook regained the lead in the fifth was a single run on Intagliata's RBI-single, scoring Jankowski, who was hit by a pitch and stole second and third. The Seawolves then made it 4-2 in the sixth on a one-out RBI-single by John Adornetto, scoring Michael Stephan, who reached a walk.

Fordham rallied back to take a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the sixth. Nick Martinez started things off with a single to right, and took second on a wild pitch. After a walk to Mobbs and a passed ball put runners at first and third, McCrann doubled down the right field line to score Martinez. One out later, Angelo Ponte singled home Mobbs to tie the game with McCrann eventually scoring on a wild pitch, giving Fordham a one-run lead.

The Rams made it 6-4 in the eighth inning, as Fordham loaded the bases on three straight walks to Mobbs, McCrann, and Walker. Ryan David then plated Mobbs with a sacrifice fly to right.

Mike Mobbs scored three times against Stony Brook.


In the ninth, Fordham tried to close out the game, getting Stony Brook down to their final strike with one on and two out. Vincent Caesar and William Carmona put together back-to-back singles to left, making it a 6-5 ballgame, as Intagliata scored on Carmona's single. Brando Casalicchio then come on to pitch for Fordham, but a pitch got by Ryan David, allowing Caesar to score and tie the game.

Fordham tried to take the game back in their half of the ninth, with runners at first and second and two outs. McCrann's fly ball to center however was caught, forcing extra innings.

In the tenth, the Seawolves got a triple to right center by Adornetto and a double to center by Pat Cantwell, giving Stony Brook a 7-6 lead. Fordham tried to rally in the bottom of the frame, as Ryan Lee opened with a single, and was sacrificed to second by David. After a fly out, pinch hitter Dan Sorine singled through the left side but was not deep enough to score Lee, as he stayed at third. Pinch hitter Stephen McSherry then struck out looking to end the contest.

For Fordham, Walker was 2-for-3 with two RBI, while McCrann was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI-double. Mobbs scored three times in the game with Martinez adding a pair of hits. Casalicchio (0-2) took the loss in relief, allowing one run on two hits in 1.1 innings. James Stone got the start, pitching into the fifth inning, allowing three runs on four hits. Ryan DeMartino (1.1 IP, 1 hit, 1 run) and Joseph Charest (3.1 IP, 3 hits, 1 earned run) also pitched in relief.

The Fordham baseball team will next be in action on Friday, March 26th, as they open a three-game Atlantic 10 series against Richmond, beginning at 3:00 PM.
