Piscataway, N.J. - (Oct. 19, 2007) - The Fordham swimming & diving teams opened their 2007-08 season at the Sonny Werblin Invitational today, hosted by Rutgers University.
On day one, six events were held in both the men's and women's competition, starting with the 50 freestyle. On the women's side,
Amanda Ciccone placed third in a time of 24.90 seconds, followed by
Christina Cosentino in 11th (25.63) and
Tressa Dunn in 12th (25.66). For the men, Fordham posted six of the top nine times, including the top two. Justin Coombs won the event in 22.40 econds, while Eric Miller took second in 22.52.
In the 500 freestyle,
Caitlin Napoli was the lone women's finisher in the top ten, taking sixth in 5:06.14. In the men's competition, Ryan Coombs placed fifth overall in 4:46.34, followed by Justin Coombs in eighth place (4:51.42).
In the 200 individual medley, Napoli and
Nicole Marshall both placed in the top eight. Napoli was fifth in 2:10.02, while Marshall was eighth in 2:10.73. On the men's side, Fordham has four swimmers in the top ten, led by Robert Gitman in sixth (2:02.50) and Jeremy Capriglione in seventh (2:04.89).
In diving action,
Marisa Colangelo took second in the three-meter competition (219.45), while the men had four divers place in the top five in the one-meter competition. Donnie Callara won the one-meter event with a score of 263.90, while Ben Otto was third with a score of 236.85.
In relay action, the Fordham women took third in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:39.46, while the 400 medley relay was second in 3:58.66. The Fordham men won both of their relays, taking the 200 freestyle relay in 1:29.02 and the 400 medley relay in 3:36.88.
Competition at the Sonny Werblin Invitational will conclude on Saturday, beginning at 9:00 AM.
