Bronx, N.Y. - Fordham University Athletics is pleased to announce that award-winning reporter Malcolm Moran '75 will be the recipient of the Bob Ahrens Award which will be presented at the Hall of Fame Ceremony on Friday, September 24, in the McShane Center on the Rose Hill Campus.
The Bob Ahrens Award will be presented annually to recognize former students and staff who are involved with sports media, both broadcast and print. To be considered for recognition, a candidate must have worked with WFUV, The Ram, or The Observer as students at Fordham and achieved significant recognition following graduation.
Moran was a reporter for The Fordham Ram, and as Sports Director at WFUV he was the first host of "One on One" when the program went on the air in 1974.
Moran has directed sports journalism programs for two decades after a career as an award-winning reporter at The New York Times, USA TODAY and other publications.
Moran, director of the Sports Capital Journalism Program at Indiana University Indianapolis, joined the faculty in January 2013. For more than six years he was the inaugural Knight Chair in Sports Journalism and Society at Penn State University, where he directed the John Curley Center for Sports Journalism. He has directed IU Indianapolis students in their coverage of the Bowl Championship Series, College Football Playoff, NCAA Men's Final Four, World Baseball Classic, NFL Scouting Combine, Indianapolis 500, Pan American Games at Lima, Peru, FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup at Tenerife, Spain, Sydney and Berlin, and the Olympic Games at Rio de Janeiro and Paris.
Moran has had several articles included in the anthology "Best Sports Stories." He serves as executive director of the United States Basketball Writers Association and is a member of the organization's Hall of Fame. College Sports Communicators (formerly CoSIDA) honored Moran with the Jake Wade Award in 2012 and the Keith Jackson Eternal Flame Award in 2020. He received the Inspiring Sports Storyteller Award from the Indiana Sports Corp. in 2021. He received the Curt Gowdy Print Media Award from the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame for lifetime coverage of basketball in 2007.
Bob Ahrens, the longtime WFUV Executive Sports Producer who was instrumental in the postgraduate success of the numerous students who worked with him, was in inaugural winner last year. He passed away on September 19.
