Bronx, N.Y. – The Fordham women's tennis squad traveled across the Hudson River to take on Rutgers University on Saturday and came up just short, falling to the Scarlet Knights, 4-3.
Fordham opened the match taking the doubles point as the Rams won two of the three doubles matches, all hotly contested. Fordham's
Nevena Kolarevic and
Julianne Nguyen defeated Mai Nguyen and Zuzanna Frankowska at first doubles, 7-6, and
Catalina Padilla and
Paola Dalmonico upended Stella Schmitz and Zeynep Ilker at the third position, 7-5.
The Rams then won two singles matches with Kolarevic taking first singles from Mai Nguyen, dropping the first set, 7-5, before coming back to win the next two, 6-3 and 6-3. Dalmonico also picked up a singles win for Fordham at the fourth spot, dropping the first set to Ilker, 6-2, but storming back to win the next two, 6-2 and 6-4.
Aya Matsunaga almost picked up a third singles win for the Rams, dropping the first set at second singles to Zuzanna Frankowska, 6-0, but forcing a third with a 6-4 win in the second set. Unfortunately, Matsunaga couldn't complete the comeback, falling 6-2 in the third set.
