Bronx, N.Y. - The Fordham University women's tennis squad celebrated another historic season at MichaelAngelo's Pizza & Restaurant on Arthur Avenue with its fourth annual End-of-Year Awards luncheon. One senior was celebrated and three achievement awards were presented for success both on and off the tennis court.
"We started this tradition with the men's program and I'm so happy we can continue it with the women's team for a fourth straight time. We obviously would have liked to continue on to the NCAA Championships but going undefeated in conference play and earning the #1 seed in the A10 Championships has never been done before so I'm very proud of everyone on the team and glad we got one last opportunity to celebrate a momentous season together" said Director of Tennis
Michael Sowter.
The Spirit Award, which is given to the student-athlete that demonstrates sportsmanship, leadership, motivation and integrity, was awarded to sophomore
Aya Matsunaga. A transfer from Hillsborough Community College, Aya immediately established herself as one of the most vocal and spirited members of the team. Aya was a consistent role model all season long with her tireless work ethic, fierce competitiveness, and positive body language. She finished the season with an 8-6 singles record, going undefeated against A10 opponents.
Sophomore
Julianne Nguyen received the team's Most Improved Player Award. In 2024, her first year with the Rams, Julianne played primarily at the #3 doubles position. In 2025, Julianne made a dramatic jump to the #1 doubles position, which she held all year, and rotated between #1 and #2 in the singles lineup. She won the A10 Doubles Championships with
Nevena Kolarevic, earning an ITA National Doubles Ranking of #109 and was named A10 Player of the Week on February 11th.
The Player of the Year Award was presented to junior
Nevena Kolarevic. In her first season at Fordham, Nevena had a historic season going 25-3 on the year in singles and winning 13 straight matches to finish undefeated in spring competition. A two-time A10 Player of the Week, Kolarevic also won 22 doubles matches and added an A10 Doubles Championships with
Julianne Nguyen in the fall. Her dominance was evident as she completed the year as the highest rated women's tennis player in the A-10 Conference.
On April 30 at the annual Block F Awards Dinner, senior
Lorraine Bergmann was named the team MVP. Bergmann helped the Rams advance to the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 championship for the fourth straight year. She was second on the team with 20 singles wins, playing mostly at the third position, and added 17 doubles victories, predominantly at second doubles, third best on the squad.
