BRONX, N.Y. – After recording a nationally ranked result in its season opener, the Fordham men's soccer team will return to action on Wednesday night with a trip to Sacred Heart. Kick-off from Park Avenue Field is set for 6 p.m. and will be streamed live on
NEC Front Row.
Fordham will play its second straight road game to start the season, having opened the campaign with a scoreless draw against No. 17 Hofstra on Thursday night in Hempstead. Graduate student goalkeeper
Carter Abbott recorded his fourth solo shutout as a member of the Rams, making four saves to neutralize a high-powered Hofstra offense behind the backline of
Thomas Gray,
Benji Jones,
Jed Dixon and
Luca Bernoth. After failing to score against Fordham on Thursday, Hofstra, the three-time defending CAA champ and last year's no. 14 seed in the NCAA Tournament, exploded four goals against American on Sunday.
Fordham outshot Hofstra by a 14-9 margin in last week's opener.
Daniel D'Ippolito took a game-high six shots while Villanova transfer
Luke Pompliano added four attempts in his Fordham debut.
Pompliano was far from the only Ram to make his first Fordham appearance on Thursday night, as seven members of the starting XI were wearing the maroon for the first time. The Rams boasted six first-year transfers in the starting lineup playing alongside freshman
Daniel Lang. When factoring in second-year transfers Abbott and
Louis Lehr, nine of the Rams' starting XI began their collegiate careers elsewhere.
Sacred Heart opened its season with an impressive 4-2 win over Holy Cross at home last Thursday night. After jumping out to a 2-0 lead early in the second half, the Pioneers saw Holy Cross answer with a pair of goals to pull even in the 77
th minute. Sacred Heart responded by scoring in the 87
th and 88
th minutes to secure its first victory of the season. St. John's transfer Aidan Borra led the way with a goal and an assist in the win.
Fordham and Sacred Heart opened the season against one another in 2023, a 3-0 win for the Rams at Moglia Stadium behind goals from the German trio of
Timo Hummrich,
Kai Griese and
Florian Deletioglu.
After taking on the Pioneers, Fordham will host its home opener against Colgate on Sunday at 1 p.m. The game will air live on ESPN+.
