Bronx, N.Y. – Four Fordham University athletic teams were among the more than 1,300 Division I squads to be publicly recognized by the NCAA for their latest Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores, posting a perfect 1,000 in the multi-year APR rating ending in 2022-2023.
Â
The Fordham water polo squad was recognized for the eighth straight year, while women's swimming and diving was honored for the sixth consecutive year, the seventh overall. Joining those two teams was men's basketball, which was recognized for the second straight season and was the lone Atlantic 10 men's basketball program to record a 1,000 APR, and women's cross country.
Â
The four-year Academic Progress Rate national average for Division I teams remained steady at 984 this year, as the division marked the 20th anniversary of APR data collection. During those 20 years, overall student-athlete academic success has risen substantially.
Â
Compared with the four-year period prior to the COVID-19 pandemic (2015-16 through 2018-19), the overall national four-year average across all sports increased one point.
Â
Nine other Fordham programs earned an APR score of 990 or higher: baseball, women's basketball, men's soccer, women's soccer, softball, women's tennis, men's track and field, women's track and field, and volleyball. Additionally the men's cross country and football programs posted scores above or at the national average.
Â
"Once again our student-athletes have done a tremendous job this year academically as can be seen by 15 programs having APR scores at or above the national average," said Fordham Athletic Director Ed Kull. "This is a testament of the ability of the Fordham student-athletes to manage a demanding class load with their athletic responsibilities. Helping our student-athletes graduate has always been one of our priorities. But this wouldn't be possible without help from our academic advisors and coaching staffs. We continue to be impressed and proud that Fordham student-athletes routinely match, if not surpass, the general student population in many academic metrics."
Â
The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams.
Â
Among conferences, the Atlantic 10 was tied for third-highest score among all 32 Division I Conferences, posting a rate of 990. This is an increase of five points over last year's rating.
The league also had 81 individual programs earn public recognition with rates of 995 or better, and 48 programs recorded a perfect rate of 1,000. The league's full data also ranks the A-10 tied for third in eligibility trends and fourth overall in retention trends.
The most recent APRs are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2018-19, 2019-20, 2021-22, and 2022-23 academic years.
