Bronx, N.Y. – On a blustery and, at times, rainy day, the Fordham University women's tennis team didn't let the weather affect its play as the Rams celebrated Senior Day with a 6-1 win over St. Thomas Aquinas College on the Hawthorn/Rooney Courts for their eighth straight win.
Fordham opened the match by taking the doubles point, winning both completed doubles matches.
Julianne Nguyen and
Franny Shea took second doubles from STAC's Jemima Parkinson and Elita Silins, 6-0, and then
Eleni Fasoula and
Xiaowei "Rose" Hu teamed up to win at first doubles over Kateryna Kryuchkova and Viktoriia Pavlovets, 6-1.
The Rams then took five of the six singles matches for the 6-1 win. Fasoula got things started with a 6-1, 6-2, decision over Alise Semmartin at third singles and then
Camila Baeza defeated Kateryna Kryuchkova at sixth singles, 6-2, 6-2.
A STAC win at second singles made it a 3-1 match but Shea clinched the match for the Rams with a 6-0, 6-4 decision over Samanta Villegas Robles at fourth singles.
Raffaela Alhach and
Demi Jhaveri picked up the final two points for the Rams with wins at first and fifth singles, respectively. Alhach defeated Pavlovets, 7-5, 6-3, while Jhaveri needed a tiebreaker to take down Silins, 7-5, 4-6, 12-10.
