BRONX, N.Y. – Riding a three-game unbeaten streak against some of the top teams in the Atlantic 10, the Fordham men's soccer team will return to action on Saturday night when it plays host to George Washington at Moglia Stadium. Kick-off is set for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
Fordham (5-3-4, 2-1-2) returns to the Bronx after a thrilling road victory this past weekend at Dayton, a team that won last year's A-10 Tournament and entered the contest ranked 18th nationally in the TopDrawerSoccer poll. After seeing an early two-goal lead slip away, the Rams responded with a pair of late markers, as Bennett Leitner retook the lead in the 80th minute before Daniel D'Ippolito iced the game in the 83rd. D'Ippolito also added a pair of assists against Dayton, capping a stellar week that saw him score one goal and assist on another in a 2-2 draw against Saint Louis on Wednesday.
For his efforts in those two decisions, D'Ippolito was rewarded with Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Week honors, a spot on the TopDrawerSoccer National Team of the Week and the NCAA's Player of the Week Award.
On the season, D'Ippolito has scored eight goals and assisted on six more, good enough for the top 25 nationally in each category. Through games played on Wednesday, the junior captain is tied for 19th nationally in goals and 25th in assists. His 22 points lead the Atlantic 10 and are tied for 10th in all of Division I. His eight goals through 12 games are the most by a Fordham player since 2017, when Jannik Loebe scored nine times in 23 appearances while leading the team to an appearance in the NCAA Quarterfinals.
After taking seven out of a possible nine points against the likes of then-No. 23 VCU, Saint Louis and Dayton, Fordham has vaulted into fifth place in the A-10 standings with just three regular season games to go. The top eight teams in the final regular season standings earn a spot in the A-10 Championship.
GW comes to the Bronx with a record of 3-9-2, 1-3-1 in the A-10. After picking up their first conference win of the season against Saint Joseph's by a score of 2-0 on Saturday, the Revolutionaries suffered a 4-1 setback at Delaware on Tuesday night.
Offensively, the Revolutionaries are led by a pair of three-goal scorers in graduate student William Turner and freshman Louis Crofts.
GW's main struggles have been on the defensive end, where they are allowing 2.71 goals per game, a total that ranks 199th out of 205 Division I teams.
Fordham and GW will meet for the 21st time on Saturday night, a series that favors the Revolutionaries, 10-6-4. The Rams' last victory in the series came in the spring of 2021, as Fordham defeated GW, 2-0, to win its fourth conference championship. Matt Sloan, now an assistant coach for the Rams, scored the game-winner on his way to earning the tournament's most outstanding player honor.
