Women’s Soccer Shuts Out GW, 2-0

Rams Get Goals From Borchers & Acosta, while King Records Fifth Career Shutout

Bronx, N.Y. – (October 17, 2024) – Behind goals from Abby Borchers and Julia Acosta, the Fordham women's soccer team took another step toward clinching a spot in the Atlantic 10 Championship by defeating George Washington, 2-0, at Moglia Stadium on Thursday night.

With the win, Fordham improved to 9-4-3 overall, 4-2-2 in the Atlantic 10, while George Washington fell to 4-8-3 on the year, 2-4-1 in the league.  The victory moved the Rams into sole possession of third place with two games remaining on their schedule.

The Rams opened the scoring in the 28th minute, when Julia Holton got a pass ahead to Liina Tervo on the near side of the field.  Tervo played a cross into the box, which found Abby Borchers for the header goal from eight yards out.  It was Borchers' fifth goal of the season, while for Tervo, it was her eighth assist of the season, tying the Fordham single season record, held by Corey Dunfey (2003) and Haley Lentsch (2006).

The score stayed that way until the 61st minute.  Ava Giudice found Julia Acosta near the left side of the box.  She got around a defender and powered a shot through the hands of the George Washington goalkeeper for her seventh goal of the season.

Fordham locked down the Revolutionaries, holding George Washington to six shots in the match, only two of which were on goal.  Rams' goalkeeper Kyla King made two saves for her fifth career shutout, one which was a tip save that went off the crossbar in the 50th minute.

Fordham will next be in action on Sunday, October 20th, as the Rams travel to St. Bonaventure for a 1:00 PM conference match.
