Women’s Soccer Plays to Draw at Dayton

Serena Mensah Makes Seven Saves for Her Fourth Career Shutout

Dayton, Ohio – (September 28, 2023) – Behind an outstanding defensive effort, the Fordham women's soccer team earned a very important point in the Atlantic 10 standings on Thursday night, playing to a 0-0 draw with the Dayton Flyers at Baujan Field.

With the draw, Fordham moves to 1-1-2 in the Atlantic 10, 3-6-3 overall, while Dayton is now 2-0-3 in the league and 7-1-5 on the year.

The Flyers had a golden opportunity for an early goal in the third minute, as Laney Huber found herself all alone in the box with an open Fordham net.  However, she pulled her shot wide to the right.

From there, it was Fordham goalkeeper Serena Mensah putting forth her best performance of the 2023 season.  She ended the night making seven saves to record her fourth career shutout.

Getting support from Fordham backers in the stands as well as from the Fordham volleyball team, who plays Dayton on Friday and Saturday, the Rams held the high-octane Dayton offense off the scoreboard for only the fourth time this season.  The Flyers, who average over two goals per game, had previously been shut out by Illinois, IUPUI, and St. Bonaventure.

Meanwhile on offense, Fordham picked their spots and did find some momentum in the second half, as Riley Carroll had two breakout efforts in the 69th minute that were both stopped by Dayton goalkeeper Batoul Reda.  Reda finished with six total saves to record her fifth shutout of the season.

The tie marked the first time in 12 all-time meetings at Dayton that Fordham has come away with a result, having lost the previous 11 visits to Baujan Field.

The Rams will next be in action on Sunday, October 1st, as they host the Davidson Wildcats for Alumni Day at Moglia Stadium.
