Women’s Soccer Draws with Stony Brook, 2-2

Carroll & Monahan Score For Fordham; Kyla King Sets Career-High with Seven Saves

Bronx, N.Y. – (August 31, 2023) – Despite a delayed start due to some travel issues, the Fordham-Stony Brook women's soccer match did not disappoint, seeing momentum shift back and forth with four goals on the scoreboard and plenty of chances for both squads.  In the end, each team had two tallies each, leaving the Rams and Seawolves with a 2-2 draw on Thursday night in the Bronx.

Fordham opened the scoring on a set piece in the 19th minute.  Lena Johnsen played a corner to the near post, which got fumbled to Riley Carroll in front for the tap-in goal.  It was her second marker of the season.

The Rams quickly made it 2-0 in the 21st minute, when a Fordham player was taken down in the box, awarding a penalty kick.  Caroline Monahan stepped to the spot and buried the penalty kick into the right side of the net for her team-leading third goal of the season.

The momentum shifted to Stony Brook in the 37th minute, as a clearance attempt by Fordham goalkeeper Kyla King was blocked by Graceann Murphy and rolled into the Fordham net to make it 2-1.

Stony Brook changed goalkeepers from starter Nicoletta Pasquarella to Ava King, the sister of Fordham keeper Kyla King, making this the second time at Jack Coffey Field that sisters have played against each other.  The last time was in 2012 when Fordham's Kristina Maksuti faced off against Marist's Marjana Maksuti.

The score stayed at 2-1 until Stony Brook knotted the game at two in the 61st minute.  Catharina von Drigalski took the corner from the far side, finding Kerry Pearson in the box for the equalizer.

Both teams had chances down the stretch for the go-ahead marker, but the King sisters were up to the task and kept the game as a draw.

Fordham finished with the slight edge in shots over Stony Brook, 15-14.  In net, Kyla King finished the match with a career-high seven saves, while Ava King had two in relief of Pasquarella, who had three in the first half.

The Rams will next be in action on Sunday, September 3rd, as they host Fairfield at 3:00 PM.
