Women’s Soccer Shuts Out Stonehill

Kaitlyn Murphy & Lena Johnsen Net First Career Goals for Fordham

Bronx, N.Y. – (August 24, 2023) – Much like their last contest, the Fordham women's soccer team saw more firsts on Thursday in their match against the Stonehill Skyhawks.  Kaitlyn Murphy and Lena Johnsen each netted their first career goal, while Kyla King recorded her second straight shutout, as the Rams topped the Skyhawks, 2-0, at Jack Coffey Field.

With the win, Fordham improved to 2-1 on the year, while Stonehill fell to 0-2.

Fordham opened the scoring in the 28th minute, as Kaitlyn Murphy stole the ball near the top of the Stonehill box and fired home a shot to the top of the net for her first career goal.

Out of halftime, Fordham goalkeeper Kyla King kept the game at 1-0 making a tip save over the crossbar on a shot by Emma Slade in the 53rd minute.

Then, the Rams doubled their lead to 2-0 in the 59th minute, as Fernanda Serna shot a free kick that was stopped by Stonehill goalkeeper Leanne Durham.  The rebound could not be handled, allowing Lena Johnsen, who was right at the six-yard box, to knock in the rebound for her first collegiate goal.

Those two goals were enough, as the Rams out shot the Skyhawks, 34-5, which was the most shots for Fordham since moving their games to Jack Coffey Field from Edwards Parade.  The previous high for the Rams was 27, which most recently done against St. Francis Brooklyn on September 9th, 2021.

Fordham will next be in action on Thursday, August 31st, when the team hosts Stony Brook at 6:00 PM.
