Bronx, N.Y. – Fordham women's basketball head coach Bridgette Mitchell has announced another addition to her inaugural 2023-24 roster in redshirt-senior transfer center
Aminata Ly from Cleveland State.
"Aminata comes from a winning program and has learned what it takes to compete in the postseason." Coach Mitchell said, "Her length and savvy defensively, her competitive nature, and her desire to compete for championships make her a great fit for our program."
Ly, a 6'4 native of Dakar, Senegal, missed her junior campaign due to injury but return in 2022-23 to appear in 29 contests, averaging 2.0 points, 2.5 rebounds (1.0 offensive), 0.4 steals, and 0.4 blocks across 7.4 minutes. A beast on the offensive glass, Ly has totaled 81 offensive boards of 233 total, good for a career 34.8% rate. With the help of Ly, Cleveland State won the 2021 WBI and the 2023 Horizon League Championship.
As a sophomore in 2021-21, Ly appeared in all 23 contests, making four starts, averaging 3.8 points on 54.5% shooting over 16.3 minutes, adding 4.7 rebounds (1.7 offensive), 0.9 blocks, and 0.4 steals. Ly led the Vikings in total blocks, with 21, and posted her first two career double-doubles, including a career-high 15 points in the team's WBI first-round victory over Manhattan, plus a career-best 14 boards in the WBI Championship game win over Portland. As a freshman, Ly played in 23 contests, averaging 1.3 points over 9.5 minutes with three games of four or more blocks.
Prior to landing in Cleveland, Ly spent two years at the Greenforest Christian Academy in Decatur, Georgia, where she was a two-time Class A All-State Honorable Mention selection and a two-time unanimous First Team All-Region 5A honoree, leading her squad to back-to-back state tournament appearances.
