Fordham (5-1-3, 2-1-0 A-10) will look for its second straight A-10 win after picking up a crucial decision against Davidson on Saturday night in the Bronx. Welcoming a Wildcats team that entered the game unbeaten in A-10 play with a 6-1-1 mark overall, Fordham jumped ahead in the 13
th minute and never looked bad, tacking on an insurance tally in the second half before cruising to a 2-1 win.
Ranked no. 22 in last week's RPI, Fordham jumped to the no. 10 spot in this week's computer rankings following the Davidson win. The nation's coaches also took increased notice of the Rams, as Fordham cracked the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 poll on Tuesday, checking in at no. 24. It marked the first time since the 2021 preseason poll that Fordham notched a spot in the top 25.
The German duo of
Florian Deletioglu and
Kai Griese provided the goals for Fordham on Saturday, as Deletioglu netted his team-leading fifth of the season in the 13
th minute before Griese added the Rams' second marker of the evening in the 59
th minute. Adding in
Timo Hummrich's five goals so far in 2023, Germans have accounted for 12 of the team's 18 goals through nine games.
Entering midweek action, Hummrich and Deletioglu are tied for fourth in the league in goals scored while Griese's three assists are tied for eighth in the Atlantic 10. Deletioglu's seven points through the team's first three league games are the highest total in the conference.
Carter Abbott recorded his fourth win of the season in goal for Fordham on Saturday. Entering Wednesday's action, the graduate student ranks third in the league in goals against average (0.83) while ranking fourth in save percentage (.800).
Saint Joe's comes into the match with a record of 3-7-1 on the campaign, including a 1-1-1 mark in A-10 play. The Hawks dropped a pair of one-goal decisions last week at home, falling to Yale, 3-2, on Monday before losing to Duquesne, 2-1, on Saturday evening.
The Hawks boast the Atlantic 10's second-leading goal scorer in Blake Driehuis, a junior forward from New Zealand who has found the back of the net seven times so far in 2023. Graduate student Bart Kooistra, who recorded a brace in a Sept. 5 win at Temple, is the only other Hawk to log multiple goals this season.
Lars Haavie, a junior goalkeeper from Norway, has played all three of the Hawks' league matches between the pipes. He carries a 1.43 goals against average to go along with a .697 save percentage, having notched one clean sheet on the season.
Fordham will continue its Atlantic 10 whirlwind on Saturday when it travels to Rhode Island for a 7 p.m. showdown with the Rams.
