Philadelphia, Pa. – (October 12, 2023) – In an extremely physical contest that saw 32 fouls and seven yellow cards, the Fordham Rams fell to the La Salle Explorers, 2-1, in Atlantic 10 women's soccer action at McCarthy Stadium in Philadelphia.
With the loss, Fordham falls to 2-2-3 in the Atlantic 10, 4-7-4 overall, while La Salle improved to 8-5-2 on the year, 6-1-0 in the conference.
The match started out great for the Rams, scoring in the fourth minute for a 1-0 lead. A long free kick was deflected by a La Salle player near the top of the box.
Alexandra Taylor headed the ball toward the right side of the box, where
Caroline Monahan found the top left corner of the net for her team leading fifth goal of the season.
The lead did not last long, as the Explorers tied the contest in the eighth minute. Giovanna Castorina slipped a pass through to Haley Gshrey at the top of the box, where she quickly turned and fired a shot inside the left post for her fifth marker of the year.
La Salle then snagged a 2-1 lead in the 32
nd minute, when Elizabeth Estrada was fouled just inside the box, awarding a penalty kick to the Explorers. Estrada then converted on the penalty kick to the right side, just out of Fordham goalkeeper
Serena Mensah's reach.
That lead held up the rest of the contest, as the two teams only managed six shots on goal combined.
Mensah finished with one save for Fordham, while Michela Auguadro was credited with two.
Fordham will next be in action on Sunday, October 15
th, when the Rams host Saint Joseph's for Senior Day at Moglia Stadium.
