Baseball Hosts Dayton For Three-Game Set

Rams & Flyers Open Series on Thursday at 3:00 PM

Bronx, N.Y. – (April 13, 2022) – Week three of Atlantic 10 baseball action gets started a touch earlier this week with the Easter Holiday Weekend, as the Fordham Rams and Dayton Flyers begin a three-game Atlantic 10 series on Thursday afternoon at Houlihan Park.

Fordham (6-23, 1-5 A10) looks to snap a six-game slide this week after being swept by Massachusetts last weekend.  Dayton (13-15, 2-4 A10) enters the weekend off a 6-0 shutout of Ohio State on Tuesday after dropping two of three games to George Washington.

OPPONENT OUTLOOK: Dayton enters the weekend with a .223 team batting average, while averaging just under five runs per contest.  Jay Curtis and Marcos Pujols have been the top bats for the Flyers.  Curtis boasts a .292 batting average, seven doubles, two home runs, and 20 RBI on the season, while Pujols has six home runs and 20 RBI to go with a .275 average.  On the bump, Dayton will send a trio of left-handed starting pitchers, led by Eli Majick, who is scheduled to make his first start on Saturday.  He has appeared in 14 games, all in relief, posting a 3-0 record with a 1.47 ERA in 18.1 innings.  Thursday's probable starter, Ryan Steinhauer, has been a lock in rotation, making seven starts on the year with a 1-3 record and a 4.78 ERA.

SERIES HISTORY: Since the first meeting in 2001, the Rams and Flyers have meet 39 times with Fordham having a one-game lead in the series at 20-19.  That one-game though was a big one, as the last meeting was the 2019 Atlantic 10 Championship game, where Fordham won the league crown by a 4-3 score in 12 innings, the longest championship game in league history.  The two teams met five times back in 2019 with the Rams taking four of them.

LAST TIME OUT: Columbia hit five home runs on Tuesday afternoon, four which came in the fourth inning, as the Lions powered past the Fordham Rams, 16-3 at Satow Stadium in New York.

The Lions jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning off Fordham starter Connor Haywood.  Anton Lazits started the scoring with an RBI-double to score Tyler McGregor from second.  E.J. Kreutzmann followed with a three-run home run to center for the four-run lead, his second of the season.  After Columbia made it 5-0 in the second, Fordham got on the board in the fourth inning, when Michael Taylor doubled to left and scored on a double by Chris Genaro.

The Lions answered with five runs in the bottom half of the inning for a 10-1 advantage.  Alex Krylov started the rally with a solo home to center, his first of the year.  After a hit batsman, the Lions got three consecutive home runs by Andy Blake, MacGregor, and Hayden Scott to grab a nine-run advantage.

Fordham got a pair of runs back in the top of the sixth to make it a 10-3 game.  Taylor drew a one-out walk and moved to third on a double by Ryan Thiesse.  Taylor came in to score on a wild pitch, while Thiesse scored on a single by Cian Sahler.  The Lions then put away the game with three runs in the sixth and eighth inning for the 16-3 victory.

For Fordham, Taylor was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, while Sahler was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two walks.  Thiesse also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.

HEATING UP: Over the last 13 games, Cian Sahler has been red-hot, batting .432 (19-44) with eight runs scored, five extra-base hits, and 10 RBI… Zach Selinger is hitting .325 in his last 13 games (13-40) with 11 runs scored and six RBI… Over his last eight appearances, Ben Kovel is 1-0 with 2 saves, a 1.26 ERA, and 13 strikeouts over 14.1 innings… Trey Maeker has a 2.25 ERA over his last five relief appearances, recording 10 strikeouts over eight innings.. Joseph Quintal has straightened things out after a difficult start, posting a 2.89 ERA over his last five appearances with nine strikeouts in 9.1 innings of work… Gabe Karslo has a 1.98 ERA in his last three appearances with 15 strikeouts in 13.2 innings of work.

WHO'S NEXT: The Rams will next be in action on Tuesday, April 19th, when the Rams travel to Army West Point for a 3:00 PM game.
